GPS Battery Life v iPhone 5s

I use an iPhone 5s with strava to track workouts. I'll be doing the marmotte in July and will need at least 12 hours battery life. I can get 4 hours out of the iPhone and use about 35% of a full charge while using Bluetooth to track heart rate. If I turn off the Bluetooth will I get 12hours of just GPS tracking?

As you can probably tell I'm a bit OCD about tracking stuff, sort of a "if there is no GPS log of the workout it didn't really happen" - kind of insanity.

I might stump up for a Garmin 510. Would that guarantee the battery life I'll need in July?

    rb

    Turn off data and bluetooth.

I've done 250km rides with a Samsung S3. Friend regularly does 200km plus with iPhone.

My Garmin 705 konks at 330km more or less.

I'd defo consider a Garmin. Up in the mountains your device is more prone to elevation calculation errors. This is particularly the case with a phone/ app. A Garmin Edge 500 is perfectly adequate with a better battery life than the 510, and frequently found second hand on the adverts sub forum. Its the cheapest model with a bariometric altimeter.

If you can pick up a second hand Edge 705 better still, although you might need to upgrade the battery to get some extra hours out of it for the Marmotte.

    ^^ This.

The Garmin is a device dedicated to what you need and battery life is maximised to suit these needs. A phone has other tasks to tend to while you ride. You can turn off these tasks but it's battery life still won't be a patch on a Garmin.

I don't think my phone (iPhone 5) would last anywhere near 4 hours no matter how I configure it to save battery.

IPhone batteries never seem to last as long as Samsungs or others, i would definitely bet against it. Plus a Garmin might be a good investment in the long run.

You could test the iPhone battery by leaving strava running all day while you are at work or something.

The battery life of my Garmin 500 has deteriorated over time. I did a 280k recently and the battery had 2% life remaining even though I switched off all alerts, light etc. A few months previously I did a 300+ and it had 22% remaining and that was without switching off alerts, light etc.

I have since bought a Gomadic to supplement it for Audax.

Maybe you're just getting slower......... :D
