My father in law is looking to purchase a new car.

He currently drives a Corolla, 1.4 4 door saloon 2003. Newer ones are bigger so does not want.

    Budget about €8000.

    Whats needed

Reliable (I don't think he would purchase a lesser known brand)
    4 doors for grandkids
    Petrol - Small mileage
    Smalish engine - Max 1.6

I was thinking a Honda Civic.

    Any other suggestions?

Petrol engine choices in the 2006 to 2011 generation of Civic would be 1.4 or 1.8 litre. The hybrid is 1.3 litre alright but sure if one of those would interest you. The 1.4 litre petrol Civic is sluggish enough in them. A Hyundai i30 or Kia Ceed 1.4 litre would be more nippy than a 1.4 litre Civic.

The civic is bigger than the old model Corolla. Same sort of size as the newer Corolla.

Does it have to be saloon?

The 1.4 Civic could be the one, he drives quite slow anyway so performance would not be an issue.

I don't think he would go for a Kia or Hyundai.

A saloon would be ideal although not essential.

If he doesn't want bulk, then a hatchback is the job.
