New Car

    Hi all.

My mother in law to be is looking at buying a brand new car and Ive been tasked with helping (sic) her out. I know next to nothing about the motor trade in general so Im looking for some pointers as to where I should base my research on. Below are some basic details of things as they stand.

She is currently driving a 03 Micra, perfect nick, approx 45k miles on it.

Ive been hearing ads on trade ins of up to €4000 so are there many places doing this?

She will be buying out right ie no finance if this makes a difference.

She is fond of the Micra but would be open to something similar - Yaris, Fiesta etc.

Mileage would be less than 10k km/pa.

Recommendations of dealers (PM is fine if naming on thread is against charter) or the best in class type car you guys would recommend would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Her mileage is tiny. Is there any reason why she is looking for a brand new car?

She will be taking an awful hit on depreciation with a brand new car. If she 'stepped' up from an 03 to say a 10 or 11 car then somebody else would have taken the hit and she would have a 'new' car.

Some people just like having a new car. Fair play to her if that's what she wants.

If she likes the Micra, there's a newer model now of her version.

Have Look at the usual fiesta/yaris/polo etc too.

There's also a new Hyundai i20 out which would have a good warranty (5 years) and reliability. The kia Rio would be of a similar ilk. My parents have one and love it.

I'd also recommend the Suzuki Swift. An extremely under rated car in this country.

She has been hemming and hawing over it for the last few months, has never really bought anything of note for herself, kids are all reared and moved out so we were telling her its about time she treated herself, bit of comfort and all that.

Bring her to a Mazda dealer. Show her the MX5. You'll be loved forever.

A micra has really lost its place in that segment.

There is a thread on here that someone is losing €5-6k on a 7 month old micra.

There's no way she'll 4k or anything near it for her micra as a trade in. She would be better off keep the micra and do a straight deal she could sell it or hand it down to a relation.

Re-sale / retaining value isnt a concern tbh. She has had current motor for 8 years I think and the new car will likely do her until she shuffles off this mortal coil.

I was looking on the Nissan.ie site and it says up to €3 to €4k trade in if buying a new vehicle.

    See here.
Time for a new car? Trade in your old car with Nissan now and you’ll get a guaranteed minimum of €4,000 towards a brand new Nissan Pulsar, Juke, Micra, Note and now Qashqai and LEAF.

She'll get €4k trade in for any new nissan. See http://www.nissan.ie/offers/new-vehicles/nissan-scrappage

The current Micra is rubbish and more a rebadged budget car designed for developing countries. Also I think the €4k trade-in/scrappage thing is dependent on financing via PCP.

The new Renault Clio is a fine car and worth looking at.

thr only small car I really like is the VW Golf. They are built very well and easy to drive.
The Yaris or any of the Seat/Skoda/Kia offerings should all be good.

    Did you mean Polo?

I did mean the golf as it's more versatile than a polo for size and confort for long journeys. The new POLOs are very nice though

The three I would recommend for you to view would be the latest; Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Polo & Nissan Micra..

The new Fiesta has a very "sporty" look on it, especially the 3 dr version. Great engines.
The new Polo looks good and is very similar to the Golf (looks wise) imo. Also have great engines. As its a Volkswagen then it would have a good resale value.
The new Micra is very good. My neighbor recently traded in her 03 Micra for a 151 and she was able to avail of the €4,000 trade in scheme. She said she's like a new woman ever since she got it. Not too bad looking and the interior aint too shabby either.

The E4000 scrappage is not dependent on financing via PCP. Nissan will give the discount if you are doing a cash deal also. Thats how I did my deal with them.
