Statement Request of unemployment

Hi, just wondering has anyone been asked to provide a "statement request" of unemployment from the social welfare office to a potential new employer?

I did the interview and they contacted me a few days later asking if I am currently on jobseekers to which I answered yes, and they said they would need the statement. I asked the lady twice from what year will I request it from and she just said to ring the social welfare office and ask them for the statement and they will know.

So I rang social welfare and the lady there said she would send one out, I asked her what years they were for and she said just 2013 and 2014. I asked why it was just the last 2 years and she said thats all she could do from her computer but that if I needed more I could request them online but they would take a few extra days to arrive.

I finished my last job in Sept 2014 if thats relevant. And my first ever job would have been in 2002. And also there has been a few gaps here and there since.

So basically my question is....has anyone been asked to provide this statement before, and how many years back did ye provide it for?

I presume this is so the employer can check to see if you are eligible for Jobplus. If that's the case they just need info for the last 12 months.

I don't think its for jobsplus, as they know my last job finished 6 months ago. Its on my application form, and one of my referees is from that job too.

Are they doing a background check?

The only other reason I can think of is if it is a company with Government contracts or tenders that has a social clause stating they will hire x% from the live register. In which case all they need is confirmation you are currently on it.

The potential job is a government job

That's probably why they want it so to have a record that you were unemployed.
I'm curious, why can't you just ask them why they need it?
