Myself and a friend will be visiting Canada this June and I've booked the flights. The flights include a stopover in North Carolina going over and Philidelphia going back. Just wondering if we need a visa/ESTA or what's the immigration process regarding stopovers in the states. Thanks!

Yep. You'll need to complete the ESTA process. Unlike some European airports, US airports do not have international transit lounges where you can transit from Flight A to Flight B, without officially entering the country. Once you get off the plane in NC, you are officially on US soil, so you'll need to have an ESTA to enter the county, even if you are just passing through. If you are flying directly from Ireland, you'll be on it when you pre clear Customs & Immigration here.
