Portable Tankless Water Heater

Hi, has anyone had trouble with a USA bought tankless water heater? We bought one from the USA through Ebay but, despite carrying out all the trouble shooting procedures, could not get it to work. The company replaced it but this one is not working either. We have used all the fittings sent with the heater apart from the gas regulator which does not fit the gas cylinder. We replaced it with one we use for torch on felt and although the gas is coming through the hose ok it doesn't seem to be getting into the heater.

It seems a bit of a coincidence that two heaters are not working so am thinking the problem lies at this end. Any help would be much appreciated

    Thanks in advance.

does it have some kind of pilot light or piezo ignition thing ? And a safety yoke that turns the gas off if the flame goes out ?

Thanks Markcheese - there is no pilot light or piezo ignition. Not sure if there is a safety thingy as, if the unit was working, the burner would only fire up when the water is flowing via the shower. Not sure if I'm allowed to say the name of the unit on here but it is an Eccotemp L5. It would appear that the gas is not getting past the gas solenoid.

They usually use propane in the states and we mainly use butane-also could the pressure that the replaced gas regulator works at have some bearing ? ( off the top of my head) -
Definitely gas entering the heater ? (Ie regulator switched on right ? )

Hi - we are using propane (in the red cylinder). Gas is definitely entering the heater (we took off the gas solenoid and you could hear it coming through). We were wondering the pressure of the gas could be the problem as everything else seems to work ok. We don't know anything about it so any ideas where we could get the information?
    Thanks

I suppose get an RGI that actually knows what he is looking at might be to obvious of a solution.

Thanks Egass13. Not sure if there's too many RGI's here as gas doesn't seem to be widely used but will check.

Thank you Irish Steve. I can assure you I have read and reread the manual very carefully. Being a woman I'm not really up on ignitions etc but yes you are quite correct in that there is a battery powered ignition which activates when the water is at a suitable pressure. We have tested our water pressure and am told by the manufacturer's technical support team that is more than adequate. I agree it is unlikely (but it does happen!) that we received two faulty units which is why we are leaning towards the gas regulator as being the culprit. I will certainly look for the discussions about camper van fitters/builders which may be able to help. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.
