You need permission in the form of a letter of authorisation from your Super, and on the FCA under section 3.2 (IIRC) you must tick the "Sights" box when applying for it with a rifle.

Cass! Where are you getting this info from?

Yes, you must declare it in sect 3.2 but that's where it ends. Please explain the written letter if you have the time.
    Thanks

You need authorisation from your Super which you get by ticking the box. Much like a suppressor.

The letter comes from what i've seen and not what is meant to be done (whatver form that takes). The two lads i know that ticked the box and received permission got it in the form of a letter and NOT a letter(s) on thier license such as the "S" for a silencer. There is or was no "NV", "IR", or second "S" on the license to indicate that the Nightvision scope had authorisation.

I say what is done as to what should be done because of the way some Super's grant authorisation for the suppressors in some districts. Any authorisation for a suppressor should be done via the "S" on the license. However some Supers do not do this an instead issue a letter. Now this is still legal and still the authorisation you need, but the problem arises from this. For the license to have the "S" on it, the authorisation for it must be entered onto PULSE. If it's not entered onto PULSE then the license is not printed with the "S". So if you are stopped by some Garda, he asks to see your license, he sees the suppressor ont he gun, but no "S" on your license, well he'll think you have no authorisation to have it.

He rings the station (assuming he does he due diligence) and someone checks PULSE. There is no "S" on PULSE. You don't have the letter on you which would do the same thing and now you're in possession of an unlicensed firearm. He seizes the firearm and suppressor. You then have to go home, get the letter and try get your gun back.

On the other hand he has done all this, you provide the letter, but he thinks you've printed it out yourself or some other issue. Remember the authorisation is not on PULSE so as far as the Garda is concerned you are not licensed for it. This is why the FPU (Firearms Policy Unit) asked all Supers to stop issuing letters and grant the authorisation via PULSE. Not just to avoid confusion, but unnecessary conflict, and as an offical and national accessible record of the authorisation.

    Hope this answers your question.
