Just heard this - shocked even though I knew he was sick.

I was on the hotline years ago. I still have the demin shirt I won with 'Tony Fenton - The Hotline' stitched on it in yellow thread.

    Will miss him

    RIP.

He's one of two DJs I've ever been on the phone to live on air and I was so nervous to be actually talking to the man I made a shobgite out of myself.

    That is terrible news.

Hard to believe he was so young. I remember listening to him presenting the UK Top 40 Chart on late night Sundays on 2FM many years ago, before he did the Hotline.

He had a great enthusiasm for Music and Radio, and he seemed like a really nice guy. RIP.

Sad, sad news. Way too young too.

For me he was definitely part of all that was great about 90's pop culture. I loved listening to him. RIP :(

    I'm in tears writing this.

I remember Tony from the hotline and trying to guess when he'd do a link as i was trying to record the songs and didn't want his voice getting in the way !!

Those early days gave me a love of music that followed and is one of the reasons i've worked as a dj for over 20 years.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tony many times when he worked as a dj in Carricks Springs nightclub in Cavan in the 90's.

He was one of the voices of my youth and another one taken so young by cancer.

His journey is over and now he puts on his cans in the big dj box in the sky.

    Thanks for the memories Tony.

Sad news. With all the attempted come backs it seemed that it was never going to happen. Unfortunately it never did

Couldn't stand him most of the time to be honest, far too cheesy for my liking. But he was still without doubt one of the DJ voices of my generation. Genuinely shocked to hear he has passed away. The last I heard he was on the road to full health and looking to come back on TodayFM.

    RIP

Suprised myself with instant tears the minute I read the headline. He was the voice of my Hotline loving childhood/teenage & (occasionally!) adult years. No matter the mood I was in, his enthusiasm on his afternoon show on TodayFM was something that would always make me smile. My sympathies to his his family, friends and his colleagues. It's never easy when you lose someone so filled with positivity. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.

Just realised that today FM had been only music for the last 45 mins and came here to see if anyone else noticed. RIP Tony - absolute legend of Irish Radio. You'll be sorely missed.

Very sorry to hear the news. Had been following his attempted comebacks over the last few months. Alas it was not to be.
He will be best remembered for his years on the hotline on 2fm and his 'You're the winner' catchphrase . I also remember him doing some tv work on the Fanta roadshow chart on RTE 2 back in the early 90s on Saturday mornings.

    Unique and irreplaceable.

    RIP

I'll miss him...had thought he was to cheesy for a while but had come to enjoy the cheese!! He stuck to his guns and kept his style all the way through his career!
    H'll be missed..
Today FM has gone to playing all music, similar to RTE in the old days when a pope died..A fitting tribute as Tony Fenton was all about the music!

    :(

His musical taste improved lots as the years went on. Used not be a fan, but grew to enjoy his afternoon show.

    Terrible news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,413 ✭✭✭✭flazio

I remember when he used to do the chart show on Friday evenings, the sports presenter was Shane O Donohue and he couldn't be bothered to read them properly because of the high energy intro to the chart shows. Fun times.

    This too shall pass.

Without doubt, one of the defining voices of a radio generation. Thanks for the entertainment, Tony Fenton.

Poor Tony. One of the greats who could carry of a cheesy DJ voice well.

Remember him well because any time I listened to him years ago, he always seemed to be on Homework time lol.

    RIP.

Was never a huge fan of Tony if I'm honest, but I'm actually shocked and saddened to hear he has passed away. Have been a Today FM listener for 8+ years now and he was obviously a part of my daily routine. I really thought he'd make it back on air in some capacity. RIP Tony.
