Is there any way/apps available that are able to scan to see what type of networks are available at a particular location. On the current network search all you get is the names of the networks not whether there gsm,3g or 4g.

Did you ever find a solution?
A workaround I have used (if you have a mobile broadband dongle or can borrow 1) is to log onto the dongle in your brouser (type 192.168.2.1 or similar - check the manual). You might have to turn off anti-virus, firewall etc temporarily.
Depending on the software a "Search Available Networks" should show available Suppliers & signal type (but maybe not strength).
