Doubles

I've noticed that a few people on here run doubles. WTF? I mean I don't get it. Why run twice a day? I know some elites need to but I'm not talking about them here

Personally I run twice a day when I can as I want to. Why not do something you love twice instead of once!
I do about three doubles a week but would do 7 if I could.
Some people run to and from work to save car usage and not to have to use public transport.

For most people it's about being the best that you can be. Sometimes it's a good idea, sometimes it's not.

Each to their own. It could be more efficient for someone to get 20km in on a weeknight as 10km each way to and from work than it would be to have to make that time in the evening. It depends on your training goals really.

Much more common for triathletes though - swim in the morning, run in the evening etc.

Some people here are running at a fairly high level

Some people here are running at a fairly high level

I find that hard to believe- saw a conversation in another thread that there are no elites on here, right?

I'd be at a high enough level myself. My medal collection is savage, I bet I've run a good few more marathons on here than most ( and have a gold OSAAT band to prove it!) and I can tell you I don't need to run twice a day. I think you expose your joints to too much stress.

I only asked the question because as most posters on this board are fairly average recreational runners I thought I'd have people think about some of the dangers.

How do you define elites? Olympic standard? Probably none here.

How much of the forum have you read?

claiming most people here are "average recreational" runners is a bit rich coming from someone who hasn't been around here much if at all.

Finally what dangers exactly are you talking about? How is it any more dangerous to split a 10 mile run into 2 than to do do it all at once?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 558 ✭✭✭ECOLII

Its working for you sure what you at for the year now 4-5 runs total? find what works and do it, quality over quantity and it will only be a matter of time till the white band is yours

    Fair play.

Depends on your definition of elite. AFAIK, there's no posters here who have, say, competed at European/World/Olympic level.

Nobody needs to run twice a day. Nobody needs to run once a day. However, if you want to maximize your potential, doing doubles may be the best way to do that.
I think you expose your joints to too much stress.
You realise doubles are often used as a way to reduce stress, right? Doing a 10k in the morning and a 6k in the evening is easier on the body than doing 16k in one go. It allows you to get more miles in without stressing the body quite as much.

What dangers? Have you any evidence of your claims?

Actually that's not true, though they generally tend to keep quiet.

You can find it as hard to believe as you want but there are some posters here who have competed at international level. More importantly, there are a few posters here who WANT TO compete at international level, and to get there they obviously have to train fairly hard.

Running twice a day putting too much stress on your joint is just plain nonsense. Sorry. Are we back to "running is bad for your knees" already?

Why do you feel the need to tell complete strangers how much they should be running? For a start it's none of your business, and secondly some of your reasoning is just wrong.

Btw, there is no gold OSAAT band.

Just looked it up. Looks like a wrist band, colour coded to symbolise the amount of marathons completed.

That wouldn't be for me but I do have a gigantic tattoo of the figure '6' sprawled across my back.

Not looking forward to changing it in the autumn.

    Just add 'SUB' before it?

How do you get these then? Do you send in proof of times to an email address or something?

OP doubles are great to get in more miles without stressing the body from longer runs.

More short runs are better that less long runs for the body.

I don't get the recent fascination with adults having to get medals in races. What's the big deal..surely knowing you crossed the line in the time you did is enough!

    .
We have an extensive database of marathon finishers for the last 15 years. When you purchase the OSAAT Marathon Band, we will send you a mail, where you will be asked what marathons you have completed and we will verify them through our database.

    No. They are very strict......

    They only accept Garmin selfies.

They say they will sell you a band in advance of completing x number marathon too, so I don't think they are that strict :pac:

No idea why I'm being called a ghost. But rude though as I am only asking a question.

Can see from some posters logs that they are running pretty good times so maybe they could explain doubles to me. Others are quite slow so not so sure they are getting any benefit off them. I'm open to correction though.

I'm friends w/ Steve from OSAAT and yes there is a Gold Band. It is for 200 plus completed. You will not find it on the website as obviously there are very few people in the world who have accomplished this feat.

All I can say is 4 days a week partying like a rockstar and running keeps me good to go for my marathons. I have medals to prove it!

So 86 marathons in a year is fine, but 2 runs in a day puts too much stress on the body?

    A few questions:

    -What's your average weekly mileage?
-You must be a very talented runner to have completed so many marathons. What's your marathon PB?
    -Do you do speed training?

I average 10 miles a week plus more often than not a 26.2 on weekend or abroad

I am 2th in all Ireland not concerned with speed as I am in my 50s and run a good amount with a much older partner. Just under 4.5 hrs

No speed training as doesn't help in 26.2

I ran three times yesterday and I'm not even a runner. Although if all you cover is 10 mile a week neither are you.

Sometimes to get your mileage up to achieve your present goals you need to double or triple up. Some people do run triple digit mileage a week.

Thinking of a conversation that two mates had when we were in our late teens

"Hahahahaha John has only knobbed one bird, his girlfriend. I've knobbed loads"
"Yeah but Johns bird is an absolutely cracker, all your conquests have been fat mouldy yokes"

Sometimes quantity is not the important thing. Debatable if a 4.5 hour marathon is running.

BOOM! Have only run 3 times since January and picked up another medal for the trophy cabinent in a local 5k today!Result. me thinks it'll be jack Daniels o'clock this afternoon!

So as of 3 days ago you only ran 3 times since January, but you have 86 marathons this year?

Were you driving them or cycling them or something? Or did each run consist of about 30 marathons?
