Any tips for bleeding brakes on your own? I seem to remember there being a kit that would take air pressure from your tyre and connect to the top of your fluid reservoir.

These actually work reasonably well(other than clip for holding the pipe onto the nipple lasts no time).

    http://www.halfords.ie/motoring-travel/tools-diy/tools-tool-kits/europat-vizibleed-brake-and-clutch-bleeding-kit#[object Object]

or just use a piece of clear pipe into a bottle
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfTmlOZbXgs&feature=youtu.be&t=74

pump the brakes a few times then check the pipe to see if it's all fluid.

Lads have a jap 2zzge 190 engine sourced locally that i can have supplied and fitted for €600 with a whopping 1 month warranty. It's still in the car, has 105k kms on it vs. 245k kms on my car.

Thats probably cheaper than a head gasket job and the engine has half the miles. Unknown history though but head gasket failure is virtually unheard of in the 2zz so i doubt lightning would strike me twice?

    Go for it.

    Any proof on the mileage?
You don't know what way it is man!

When buying an engine like that you should do the belt and a full service to be sure.

    I wouldn't personally!

If it's still in the car, it can be heard running, checked out, possibly test driven too.

    What happened?

The bearings that are on cam shaft going in to transfer box. The oil needs to be changed there every 45k km, but I never knew that... All it was just sound winy noise, had to park it until parts arrive on Thursday. There is a small chance of it falling apart and then destiny whole box, so I won't risk it.
While getting that done will have all diff and gearbox oil change too. My old straight through exhaust goes back on too as it had to go off the car anyway.
It's annoying to have a repair bill now, but to be honest, it's a first thing in 3 years. On top of that it is a Subaru... I'll take that!

It's still running in the car. It's the same car i bought the wheels off of, so i can see it on the odometer and verify the engine from the logbook but it can't be driven because it's in a breakers with no wheels.

They are a chain driven engine, but while the engine is out i'd probably get the tensioners renewed and the clutch done.

When you buy a second hand engine, you buy it only if you see it in the actual car. Not already taken out. I have seen a lot of cases where engines are out and claimed to be full y working and with 20k miles on them.... When I'm reality they are worse then you one trying to replace...

I agree on full service and belt change too. Not even in "might as well" territory. More of "you don't know the history of that engine at all".

Anyone in Limerick have a loan of an inner tie rod removal tool? Its a tool that I honestly don't want to buy. I can never really see it been used more than once and you know...tis pricey. I had this "ah ffs why couldn't it fail on anything else" expression on my face in the test centre today :pac:

Haha I didn't even notice that. Is it weighed with the tester in it i wonder? He was about 6ft6 and easily 16-17 stone. Beast of a man plus tonne and a half car would give that weight.

    Heaviest car I have owned: BMW E36 318TDS - 1280 kg
Lightest car I have owned: Fiat Punto 60S - 890 kg

Fun fact: My Golf estate is a little shorter and weighs a bit less than Bora. :P

One little jack isn't supposed to support the whole weight of a car anyway.

I know that. But try lifting my car with a lidl jack. Its a struggle. It probably wouldn't budge sobaneks tank of a thing.
