Best of luck with it. Speaking of LED lights does anyone else notice a lot of mid 2000's or older cars going around with them tacky led DRL's in the lower grill they look ok on 1 out of every 10 cars they just look wrong on the rest of them IMO. Infairness I am starting to see drl's benefits after having them on the Megane but I wouldn't be going fitting them to cars that don't have it I suppose each to their own most manufactures call them drls renault call them automatic dimming headlights :pac:

Have you seen them on the green passat in kk? They're pink  have to say a sight to behold

I suppose it really depends what type of LED fitting your using too. I just wouldn't be a fan but maybe that's just me. Although now you get people using them as an alternative to dipped headlights in the middle of town at night thays annoying.

I got em for free so put them on for the craic. They were as horrible looking as the van. I didn't care

Some one put a small ding in the wing of my car the mark will polish out out the dent is right on the crease so probably won't pull out. Like someone whacked a door of it full force. Sometimes you would think it's a complete waste of time trying to keep a cars body clean and straight as there will always be someone that doesn't give a fcuk that will damage it. Ah well that's life I suppose.

Ya paintless dent removal should sort it out handy enough. I'm dropping my car to get bumper re sprayed thursday and getting about 6 or so dents fixed by dent devil here in cork at same time. Some clowns out there I always park away from others and still seems to happen:mad:

Unfortunate about the wing but thats a horrid defeatist attitude... That happened to me before, I made sure it didn't happen again or if it did I've verbally abused those who don't think much of others cars!

I'd be in a grave by now if I kept telling myself that! :(

Get some fire in your trousers and stand up to those that dent your car, if you know who it is :)

Ah well I didn't see it happen and its there now so can't undo that is what I mean. But I get what your saying I was sitting in it a few weeks ago and two lads fighting and one feel on the bonnet and I pure got out and absolutely lost it with them the look of fear in their eyes I don't often get annoyed and lash out but when I do. The two of them moved on fairly lively no damage though thankfully

Is it you've only just got it or wondering should you keep it. This kind of applies to all engines but keep the oil changed at least every 10k miles keep the filters changed don't drive the rag out of it when it's cold ( ie engine not upto operating temperature) once you do that you are looking after it and it should look after you although on an 11 year car small things will go wrong the odd time.

I do my oil changes every 6k I'm not a fan of long life oil changes.. I plan on getting rid of it next year and going for another one because I love them.. I had huge plans to take out a loan over 10k to buy a 2010 > car but I seen sense :P hoping to get an fr 130bhp one :)

Definitely if you like it no point going of to borrow 10k for the sake of getting a newer plate Id imagine it would be a very nice car with 130bhp.

Was in Halfords there today, and they seem to be taking advantage of them. At least 4/5 different types of them tacky aftermarket drls. Never look well on anything I've seen.

Hy lads. Seeing as the head gasket is officially gone on the celica i'm wondering what i should do.

Realistically a good repair is going to cost somewhere between €5-700... but i'm wondering is it worth spending that on a €1500 car with 150k miles on the clock. Only had it 4 months so the car is still relatively unknown to me so to speak (in terms of other problems that may crop up). Despite the high mileage it has a full service history, serviced in a main dealer until 2012.

    Basically my choices are:

Repair the celica, spend €750 on a €1.5k car that i've already spent €2.5k on.

Donedeal my celica with an honest description for around €1k, put around €1k to it and roll the dice again with another celica.

I bought this car with the intention of spending nothing on it and the full history was attractive. If it had half the mileage i'd definitely repair it, but with 150k on a "performance" engine i'd be sick to shell out for the head gasket just for the bottom end/ gearbox something else to go in the near future.

I don't use the car too much now, maybe 50 miles a week. Now college is over the astra is the main car again.

Sorry to hear TFB, genuinely. I had to do the head on my 156 as preventative maintenance as it was beginning to show signs that it was going. I went ahead and did it, cost about €650, but I place a huge value on that 156.

It's definitely a tough one. But older cheaper cars are always going to cost money to run, you seem to just be unlucky. Personally I'd fix it but that's just me, especially if it's only a weekend car, if something else crops up you can take your time with it.

With the head off you'll be able to hopefully gauge the general health of the engine too, maybe even drop the sump while you're at it.

I'd do the head gasket on it, but I guess it depends on if you like it enough, and would keep it long enough to justify the expense....?

Same, it's leaking to the outside of the block not into a cylinder/ oil gallery so i have a bit of time to think. I'm disappointed because i wanted this (a bit like your 156 :P) to be a high mileage hero. I'd no plans to change it, really happy with it as a car, easily looking at another 2-3 years of ownership in my head.

I guess it's just a time/ hassle thing. Although i dont need the car i hate not having it there, being without it for 5 or 10 days, chasing parts etc seems like a great deal of hassle when i could just buy this today for example, virtually identical car http://touch.adverts.ie/car/toyota/celica/2001-toyota-celica-vvtli-nct-2016/8096014 and just sell my own one in time. Maybe i'm being crazy. Maybe it's because i havn't bonded with it yet. Fuuuuuuuuck sake.

Yeah mine was leaking to the outside of the block too a very small bit due to being built with a composite gasket instead of a metal one.

My mechanic had my car back to me within 3-4 days so it could be done sooner than you think, most Toyota garages are good at stocking parts too aren't they?

Obviously the convenience side of things it'd be easier to buy another one, but I'd still hold onto the one you have..!

Let's try to do some maths.

If you go option #1, total spent would be 4.750 roughly, right?

And your engine would be in good, known condition.

If you go option #2, total spent would roughly be 5.000, right?

(1.5k bought plus 2.5 put, equals 4k, 1k more to buy another)

And you'd buy another celica with God only knows what engine in.

    Repair it!

    Tfb,

Would you give it a belt yourself? Simple enough job when it comes down to it and once you have somewhere local that will skim the head you'll be ok.
Nice thing to achieve and you'll feel like a king driving it knowing you done it :)

I'd be a confident diy'er but i think that may be beyond my grasp, i'd like to give it a bash but if i got stuck half way i'd be ****ed!

    @jou
Option 1 (repair) would cost €3250 all in. I was just saying is it worth going that far on a car worth €1.5k at a struggle. Benefit: car that is somewhat known to be good.

Option 2 would cost around €3750. My old celica cost 2.5k, buy another one for 2k, sell my old one for 750 or so. Costs a little bit more overall but a quicker turnaround time, new car excitrment and quite possibly a much lower mileage vehicle. Downside of unknown history.
