I just read that Sam Simon, the co-creator of The Simpsons, has died at the age of 59 as a result of Colon Cancer.

He was a writer on Taxi and Cheers as well.He had a lot more to do with the Simpsons success than Matt Groening ever had.

RIP, really sad news. From what I read, it was really Simon who set the tone of the Simpsons its classic years.

He was the show runner for the first 4 seasons (he was in charge of the show's direction and writing)
He assembled the initial group of writers (one of the greatest ever )
He created numerous characters such as Apu,Chief Wiggum, Moe (that fleshed out Springfield as a whole)
He didn't create the Simpsons but he was more fundamental to its brilliance than Groening was

Slightly saddened about his support of PETA though. And the way he seemed to distance himself from his involvement with the Simpsons after he left.
