Hi I'm currently on JSA but I'm wanting to switch over because I don't feel like I'm capable of working right now, a lot of panic attacks just at the thought of it and I was wondering what benefit to go on, I'm currently being pushed into a fas course at the moment with the threat of my payment being cut if I don't so I want to move as swiftly as possible, the course starts in 2 weeks and I plan on going to citizens advice tomorrow I lost track of time today.

You will need to see your GP,and see if you can claim illness benefit.

The Fas course may not be that difficult and may be a way of easing back into a routine without it being a full-on work situation. Would you not see your doctor for some help with the panic attacks and give the Fas course a try? Just a thought. Good luck with everything.

  • I have PTSD and am on several medications. I also went to Citizen's Advice and was told that since I could walk and talk then I was fit for work and unable to claim disability.

I'm doing a momentum course at the moment and I'm dismayed. I'm having to sign in multiple times a day. If you miss a day they ring up asking where you were! Not that I've missed a day myself but I've overheard others. Moreover one lad got called up by them and he was in the fcuking lecture room.

I was excited at doing a course but I'm starting to feel criminalised. It's like a Big Brother type situation. If someone comes at me with another form to sign then I'm packing it in. They can penalise the **** out of me. This is humiliating at the moment.

What you describe is normal practice on some courses, including VTOS, although it is understandable, given your PTSD, that it is very stressful for you. Sometimes if you go in a bit earlier you can be ahead of the rush and perhaps do the form filling at a time of the day you are not swamped by other things. The form filling should tail off anyway and the signing in and out become more automatic.

That's not true. People suffering from mental health issues are awarded disability allowance depending on severity of illness. The majority of people with mental illnesses can talk/walk.

My advice to both of you is to apply for illness benefit (if you haven't enough contributions you can still qualify for SWA) and apply for disability allowance.

If you're unfit for work you are required to tell the DSP immediately and apply for SWA/Illness Benefit.

I got refused last week,i suffer from the same condition as yourself.Depression, anxiety and panic attacks and I'm on zispin to treat it.I got straight on the ball and wrote a letter kicking up a stink and lo and behold a travel pass arrived in my letterbox this morning. I was extremely fortunate in that the whole process took only three months,it usually takes MUCH longer.

Send in an application for disability allowance and it will run in conjunction with your Jobseeker's Allowance and you won't be asked to look for work. Both will run at the same time. Then you won't need to change your payments and this will reduce the stress of it all. Hope this helps.
