Car started overheating heading to work Fri night.
Pulled in and cooled it off.then got it as far as a 24hr.
Got it towed home and only got to have a look today.
But when engine is running, there's no obvious leaks/steam escaping.
Interior heating isn't working (always cold)
Had a look in the coolant bottle and no bubbling coming thru.
So moved on to the thermostat.
A friend who I would trust mechanically suggested taking out the thermostat and driving a few miles to check if that was the prob.so after 2 miles temp gauge got worryingly high again.
Got home and noticed coolant was after getting really low
So figured out there isn't any kind of seal in the thermostat housing.

I'm at a loss.I may be wrong but if it was the head gasket, the coolant would have been bubbling??

When you say worryingly low was the expansion tank totally empty. I have seen the expansion tanks leak in these cars you won't notice anything with the engine ticking over because it's when the pressure builds up they leak.
Take it for a drive and pull over and get the bonnet open fast and you'll spot if it's that.
Mind you in my experience even with the tank almost empty the gauge wasn't in the red.

Before I took out the thermo, coolant level in expansion bottle were normal.just under Max.
And after I drove with thermo out, is when it was low

It might not be the headgasket but you now know the 'stat is not the problem (the stat is rarely the problem, before the internet they never were imo :pac: )

Anyway, if I was you I'd be checking the rad for flow - it's quite likely fine too unfortunately.

So than it's a pressure & sniff test.

Have you checked the oil for signs of coolant contamination?

So the car overheated on Friday night there was no loss of coolant it was still at the max level on the expansion tank.
If so I would think maybe there's a problem with your water pump.

No signs of any contamination in oil.
Anyway to test water pump easily??

If there's flow through rad the water pump is fine.

Water pump most likely. Have seen them round off the water pump drive and also seen a few where the plastic impeller in the pump came off the shaft.
