Importing a car - various questions

    Hi all,

hope I'll be able to get some useful advice on here.

I'm moving from Japan back to Ireland in a few days - we have had a car here for a couple of years and have already shipped it (but it won't arrive for another 5/6 weeks I'd say). We did the same thing about 5 years ago and
    • employed an import company (or whatever they are called) to deal with whatever company received the car from the ship, and also work with customs and get us our tax exemption at Dublin Port (by proving we'd owned it for more than 6 months)
    • and we also paid a company to transport it down to Clare (it had to be registered where we were living).

    I'm wondering two things:

Can anybody recommend good companies to help me with either/both of the above?

Or can anybody explain how I could go about either/both myself and save a few quid?

I can't see any way to get it to Limerick (where we'll be living) without paying for it, but I'm a bit more optimistic that the tax exemption might be possible by myself.

One thing I seem to remember from last time is that not just anybody can walk in and claim the car (with documentation obviously), rather it had to be a company. but maybe that was just a line the company sold me.

Any advice/info would be welcome, and I'd be most grateful.
