I've done just this, and when trying to figure out a solution, came across a few threads on the same subject.

So I rang the head office of my favoured car rental company today, who told me to toddle off down to ndls and they would issue me a letter which would be accepted here in lieu of a licence.

I did so, however it's not that simple.

However you just ring the NDLS (I was too late and I need a car tomorrow) on the hard to obtain number, and they will issue said letter via mail within 24 hours for €15

Not something that is well known so I thought I'd post it. Given I was told it by a car rental company, I thought that was even more worth it :)

No guarantee that all of the rental companies will accept such a letter so you'd better name them.

It's not a libel issue, more power to any company that will facilitate someone who is in that situation but I'm pretty sure that not all companies will rent a car on the basis of a letter and not an actual licence.

It was Dan dooley rentals we've used them at least six times

They apply the same system in the uk

    Your "favoured" car company?

Do they have your licence on file? May be a solution there. Or alternatively, if you are stuck, be polite. Explain it to the rental desk and hope for the best.

I lost my entire wallet and the rental desk at liverpool airport still sorted me out (although it was only a 24 hour rental.)

Same with Enterprise, for what it's worth. Think you can get that proof via email too

I rocked into John Lennon airport before with my license still in my car at Dublin Airport.
The chap behind the desk was great, rang Wicklow got put through to someone who could give / confirm my driving license details and after that it was my responsibility if stopped.
Guess it's probably a regular occurrence.
