Ben Carson, neurosurgeon from John Hopkins Hospital (retired), has said that being gay is a choice and gives the example of prisoners engaging in homosexual acts as proof of this.

    He told CNN last week...
"Because a lot of people who go into prison go into prison straight -- and when they come out, they're gay. So, did something happen while they were in there? Ask yourself that question"

I believe this is a typical example of missing the point completely. My guess here is simply that when you are in the company of only same sex for 24 hours a day for years at a time I'd say it's just the physical release that prisoners are seeking here, they don't turn gay and get the emotional connections that goes with it, it's just sex.

It reminded me of Panti's speech about how she looks at straight couples and sees a life lived together but the straight person she was referencing only saw a sex act, not human being, when looking at a gay person. Ben Carsons statement smacks of that.

By the way, once the good doctor saw that his comments had gone down like a lead balloon he quickly issued a facebook apology.

This guy is considering running as a US Presidential Candidate for the republican party.

Its all or nothing. I don't think you extract emotional connections with a person from an act. Its part and parcel. I don't think one's ability to make emotional connections is in anyway contingent on one's gender/sex preference.

My understanding is the preferred pronoun that Rory prefers is he when he is not in drag and she when she is in drag.
I will always a persons preferred pronoun rather than making assumptions.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I had to force myself to read the rest of the post after that. I understand that he is a well renowned neurosurgeon, but honestly, his opinion shows a very poor understanding of men who have sex with men.

Notwithstanding that fact, he's the bloody neurosurgeon, surely he should be offering an answer to the question rather than expecting a news reporter to answer the question on the spot!
