Brake pads changed, brakes now feel softer

Hey, so just picked up the girlfriend's car from the garage. They just changed the brake pads, said they were badly worn.

Anyway, one of the first things I noticed when I originally drove her car the other day was how hard the brakes felt compared to mine. Very little pressure needed.

Driving back from the garage I noticed they were considerably softer, required more pressure and the car doesn't stop as quickly.

I'm thinking I should have brought it back immediately but they are closed now.

Anyways, the badly worn brakes, could a symptom be the very hard braking? Is it now normal or has it been converted into a death machine? :)

What's the distance from garage to home? Did the brakes firm up at all over the course of the journey

Are they feeling spongy as if air is in them? If you turn off the ignition and press pump the breaks is there any air feeling in them?

give them a little while to bed in. Thye should have warned you to be cautious for a couple of days

Garage Should have put new discs (at extra cost ) on if they were badly worn.

Give them about 200-300 miles to bed in they will be fine. If it was the rear pads they usually take longer.

About 20km. They did appear to improve somewhat by the end of the journey.

Guy at work suggested that there may be air in them and that perhaps the guy in the garage forgot to release it. I did as you suggested and didn't notice anything strange.

Yeah, thought I wasn't going to brake in time at the first junction on I got to.

Well, they said it wasn't on the metal but they needed to be changed badly.

Okay. I'll be careful and see how it goes!

    Thanks for all the replies.

Got new brake pads recently, was warned they'd be softer for awhile by the garage, so its probably normal.

Best way to bed in new brake pads quickly is with multiple hard braking stops. Find somewhere quiet and safe to do it however. Industrial estates after hours are a good place or car parks well after closing.

If in doubt drop it back , a mistake might have been made , they might need bleeding.
Let the mechanic drive it , he will tell you soon enough if they are right or not
