AITI Chartered Tax Adviser Qualification

    Hi,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am considering enrolling in the AITI Chartered Tax Adviser course this summer.

I have no tax or accounting background - educational or professional. My qualifications are in public policy and government. According to the course coordinator this is not an issue as people from all educational backgrounds can complete this course.

I am not concerned about the course content however, I am concerned about finding a career in tax once I complete the course. Most positions advertised look for an accountancy qualification as well as the CTA qualification.

Is thIs the case? Would the CTA qualification be pointless without previous accounting experience/qualification when pursuing a job?

    Thanks

Its by no means a pre-requisite. In my experience many people applying for tax jobs have accountancy qualifications - in a sense its natural that some will wish to specialise in tax after doing the accountancy - but as many don't and its never been an issue in my workplace.

We tend to look at qualifications ie. whatever they are, and assess based on how well the person did in those, and experience - does the person have any, if so in what areas etc.

I would say the main hurdle you'll face if you find yourself in an interview for a tax position is the lack of experience working in tax. Your personal qualities (and the potential relevance of your prior work the public policy field) may well be sufficient to overcome this, but still I'd say the positions you'd be in the running for would be fairly junior, at least until you prove yourself in a role.

    Best of luck.

Maybe read the big stickied thread on the forum perhaps?

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond Dogsears, that has certainly put my mind at ease.

There are no sticky threads on the app as far as I can see Mr. Incognito so I didn't spot the previous thread. First time poster also so still finding my bearings.
