Shudder from brakes at point of stopping Passat

    Hi

I got some bits done to my 2005 1.9tdi Passat today in advance of NCT next week.

    - new CV boot
    - Lights focussed and polished on outside

Since I picked up the car I've noticed something strange with the brakes. It only happens when coming to a gradual stop (so driving in traffic, car parks etc). Right at the end of the braking movement just before coming to a full stop there is a shudder noise and momentary feeling of "loss of control" almost as if the abs is kicking in or something for about quarter of a second or less and then it returns to normal.
The way it is occuring is only on gradual braking motions it almost feels like it only occurs when the brake pedal is being pressed slowly past a certain level that it kicks in. There are no lights on in the dash or anything else unusual.

Description above may not be great but I was wondering :

    - Is this the symptom of something obvious ? I always thought failing discs were less "acute" in their symptoms. ie would occur at all speeds etc

    - Is there some way the CV boot changeout process by the garage could have caused this ? This was not happening this morning before I brought the car in, seems a bit weird.

    Thanks

Check the wheel has been tightened properly. Do the basics first.

The front wheel speed sensor probably got moved slightly when the CV boot was being changed. It is a very common issue on those Passats. I've seen it lots of times. Unlike most cars there is no bolt holding the sensor in place. It just pushes into the hub carrier. This means it can just as easily get pushed back out again when work is being done in the area of the CV joints. It's an easy fix. You need to push the sensor back in until it is almost (but not actually) touching the CV joint.

    Hi George
Thanks for this. You reckon what you've described would be consistent with the symptoms ? I'll give em a ring tomor morning.

Yes definitely consistent with what I've seen.
