Traffic Management Field Study

    Hi; have an excellent ESS group (15 students) and want to do some simple field work (approx 5/6 classes) to prepare them for next year's project and as a reward for their work rate this year.
    Thinking of doing a traffic management study to keep it local and simple.
    Anyone ever done a traffic study and if so any approach you took that might give me more ideas?
    A bit of practical field work be beneficial to them and I hope they will enjoy it.

    ESS!!! Hurrah!

    Many schools do traffic surveys as part of their ESS Field Study. Can I suggest that one thing you could do is use the info gathered in this year's simple project and compare it with data gathered in next year's 'real' Field Study?

    In terms of the Field Study, combine the traffic survey with something else for the real thing. A traffic survey on its own would not be enough for the actual FS, at either OL or HL. You could combine it with (depending on where your school is) local residential patterns, a study of existing public transport routes, locations of schools etc.. You could combine OS Map work with patterns of travel.

    One thing mine used to like was looking at the number of single occupant cars at different times of the day. They then worked out with their Maths teacher, how much parking space the average car took up and how much space the cars passing them in ten minutes would use. They drew posters showing how many football pitch sized spaces would be needed to park all the cars, compared to buses. Of course, even less if the buses kept moving.

    On the practicalities:

    If it's a busy street, I used to have one calling and the other marking the sheet.

    One, perhaps one that might be 'a lively character' would be in charge of watching the time so that we would all finish at the same time.

    They'll be mad to get something weird like a JCB or tractor, so make sure there's a box to mark them in if they get one.

    Clipboards made in the woodwork room were handy, as were polypockets for the rain.

    We used to send our results to the local city council, who to be honest, were always very good about replying to us and in one case sent someone in to discuss the results with the kids - they loved that.

    When it comes to the L cert project I would be weary about the traffic study. I marked LC Geograpy for a few years. My experience is that it is very difficult to get the required SRPs with a traffic study, this was at ordinary level so it would be much tighter at higher level.

    For the ESS I'm sure it would be ok but I would steer clear for the LC. This is based on my experience as an examiner alone.
