Water Hammer

Hi all. I had a problem with the downstairs toilet. Had to change the valve. As the shut off valve wasn't stopping the water and it was going into the overflow, and trickling into the bowl(Bottom entry, vertical type).
Since then the pipes have been banging like mad. The tank is above my bedroom and it's driving me mental. I drained the tank in the attic and filled it again to reintroduce air for cushioning. That worked for a few days but the banging is back. If I leave the cold tap on in the ensuite the banging stops but obviously can't leave it like that.
Here's hoping someone out there can help. Sorry for the long-winded spiel.
    Thanks

Something of a guess, but: water hammer in domestic pipes is often caused by a tap or a valve shutting suddenly under pressure -- lever top taps do that because the tap shuts off instantaneously if you snap it down, much as do the modern toilet cistern valves. Opening a tap in an upstairs en-suite might stop it because it would be reducing the pressure to the suspect valve. This suggests to me at least, that the cistern is letting a little water by, leaking it slowly into the toilet pan. That causes the water level in the cistern to drop slowly, and the valve then opens but shuts again almost immediately since it isn't trying to completely fill the cistern. With a full pressure head on it, it might close with a bang. I would flush the toilet and then watch to see if there is any leakage into it when the cistern is full.

Otherwise, a cardinal rule of fault finding is what was last done? That is often where the new fault lies!

Install a small potable expansion vessel on the mains in the attic
