    Hi all.

Thinking of making the switch to Sky from Vodafone broadband. Just wondering if anyone else has made the switch and what's your opinion on it? My speeds are always terrible so not looking for anything there to change just want to switch since Vodafone have put up the prices. Also, if I order online, how long does the changeover process take and will I be without broadband from Vodafone until Sky arrive or do they just send out a modem and it's plug and play? Thanks in advance!

    Eircom went up.

    Then Vodafone went up.

    Who's next, I wonder......

I have sky broadband. It's pretty poor. I was promised 80gb contention free, currently getting about 12gb on the wireless. before that i was with UPC who weren't bad at all. I moved on the promise of better speed.

Their tv is great. I don't think their there with the broadband yet though.

As I said, speeds aren't a breaking point because I don't expect much. How did they go about setting you up?

The setup was fine. No issues there. Took a week or so to get it installed.

Live in the country, so not a huge choice ... but moved to Sky about 18 months ago. All went well until 10 days ago. Seems lightening knocked out my modem. Despite 5 calls (so far), I'm still waiting for level 2 support to contact me to confirm the fault. Only then will I get a new modem. At this rate, expecting it to be next week at least (over two weeks) before I'm up and running again. On the same evening a neighbour was similarly "hit" ... he got his new modem last Friday. Looking for a new supplier now ... maybe wireless ... any suggestions?

    Sky are a joke.
    1. installers standard practice of using the minimum amount of wire was ridiculous.
Ran it under the front door!
2.Signed up on the 26th of Feb still not turned on.
    Sky blame Eircom

They don't care as long as they get you signed up and take your money.

    mine is still down anyways.
Called and went through the troubleshooting.
Referred to their engineering team who are to get in contact with me later this week! To top that, could take between a week and 2 weeks to get sorted.

I've going through a load of testing with them.
I can get very close to 80GB via a cable connection to a laptop, its the wireless that sucks.
25MB is about average now, it spikes at 40 MB which isn't bad, but it's less then half I am paying for

    Thanks!
I reckon the router is where most of the problem is. I dont know if its just crappy at broadcasting the signal or the frequency that it uses allows for too much interference .

I was with Sky for ADSL2+ and the wireless signal was from the old hub was rubbish. Can you change the WiFi channel on the new hub? You can use iSSIDer to see what channels your neighbours are using.

In fairness Sky can do nothing about your wireless, many things contribute to poor wireless, how far you are from router, thickness of walls etc...

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

Disagree with you there . I work in IT so I have a fair idea on these things.
The walls are thin, and even standing beside the router its the same.
I've looked at what could cause interference, wireless phones, baby monitor and turned all that off before the test.

My problem is not wireless related but I do think the hub could be faulty.
The last couple of nights when I turned on my laptop and opened iTunes, I noticed it started downloading podcasts, but then the internet connection drops after a minute or so. What could cause this?
I can rule out it being my laptop, as my housemates cannot get online with their devices either.. (not sure if they have experienced getting connected for a minute or so like I have)

For the first 3/4 weeks, the connection was flawless...
