Ford Mondeo Idle Issue

    Hi guys

    I have a 2006 Ford Mondeo 1.8 petrol
I have been having an issue with the idle lately, it has very high revs.
When I start the car from cold or hot it sits at about 1,000rpm.

Now when I'm driving it and go to change up or down a gear and press the clutch in the rpm will increase even though my foot is not on the accelerator, this will go up as far as 5,000rpm and just stay on it. I can then put it into neutral and it will just stay at about 3,000rpm - 5,000rpm, occasionally it may just drop back down to a normal level. I find if I give the accelerator and little tap this works sometimes to bring it down to a normal level but this doesn't always work.

I have been researching the problem online and its been suggested that
    1. The throttle cable can stick. I have looked into this and that is not the problem.
    2. The flap in the throttle body can stick due to a carbon build up. I removed the throttle body and cleaned it out but the problem is still there.

Can anyone suggest what the issue might be?

Does anyone even have a slight idea?

is it a cable throttle or drive by wire? if its the latter id say the potentiometer in thr pedal assembly is goosed. Perhaps a trip to your local mechanic could be of benifit.

    Idle Control Valve

It's just after the throttle on the inlet manifold - worth a look at.

Ok so I'v checked out a few things on it now in the following order

Throttle Cable: Have checked that its not sticking and it moves freely

Throttle Body: I have removed this and cleaned all the dirt from it, there was a small build up of dirt but nothing to be concerned about. The flap moves freely and there is no gaps between the flap and the housing for it. The gasket is also ok.

Throttle Position Sensor: I did originally think it was this as when I removed the screws that mount it to the throttle body and turned it freely, this did adjust the idle to the right speed. I did removed the sensor and as I was looking at it I broke it . I ordered a new one and have since fitted it to the car but the problem still persists but the engine light has now turned on.

Idle Control Valve: I removed this and cleaned it out. Performed a test on it by connecting a 12volt battery to it, I have read if functioning correctly you should hear a click sound every time you connect a battery to it and it does click every time. The gasket is also ok from the ICV to the throttle body.

I think my next step is to check to see what that engine light is so have I have purchased a diagnostic tool to see what it means.
The car is also due a service but I just haven't got around to doing that yet

Dual mass flywheel on way out that can cause revs

I did have the clutch replaced about 20,000km ago

Isn't there a way on some fords to make the DTC code display on the dash. something like hold the trip meter reset button, then start the car and continue to hold for a few seconds. I've done it before on my old focus. The codes aren't as detailed as an OBD scanner, but it might help.

Don't know if this was done as I didn't do the work myself. What kinda cost would it be to get the flywheel and clutch done together?

Thanks for that but my mondeo would be the previous model and does not have this function. I have purchased a OBD scanner to see what the fault is, just have to wait for it to be delivered

How? That's a new one on me.. Op check the crankcase ventilation system for splits it sounds like you're getting an air leak.

Not saying no to the dmf, but as you say -vacuum hoses etc definitely worth checking

Do the petrol engined mondeo have a DMF?

So my diagnostic tool came today and I'm after running it on the car, here are the following errors that came up

Does anyone know what it means by that the circuit is low?

The detected voltage is out-of-range at the lower end, or, occasionally, lower than that set by the relevant control module, i.e. ECU, PCM, etc.

Record the codes then clear them. Then see which come back. Throttle codes may have been set by yourself when you damaged theold one.

You cant check the idle control valve with direct 12v. Idle control valve is driven by a pulsed signal, frequency (pwm signal)

The best way is to drive it with a scan tool that is equipped to do this.

it wont be either of those problems.. get a can of brake cleaner and with the engine running spray it in and around the intake manifold ,, you should notice the revs dropping off when you hit the air leak,, there is a small rubbber hose right in between cylinder 2/3 when u look vertically down on the intake mainfold that always draws in air causing revs to rise or power steering pressure switch is broken or wires from same are damaged , petrol mondeo do not have dmf only diesels

Just wanted to follow this thread up in case anyone has this problem themselves.

It was a vacuum leak that was causing all the hassle. There was a pin sized hole in one of the vacuum hoses just behind the inlet manifold
