Macbook Air Screen = Black

    Hi

My MBA screen only shows black. When I connected it to external display it works perfectly.

    I have tried

    1. PRAM
    2. SMC

But nothing is working. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and that showed no problems.

I know it's probably not the logic board or graphics chip but does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem.

the laptop is out of warranty by 11 months. I know therefore I'm going to have to pay for it.

Does anyone know how much this is roughly going to cost. The repair shops won't give me an exact figure and I'm trying to work out if I'm better off buying a new computer.

    Thanks

you could make consumer law claim

    apple.com/ie/legal/statutory-warranty/

Are you sure it isn't just the CCFL or whatever bulb is lighting the display? Have a close look under a bright light... can you see anything on the screen at all?

Nah I tried using a flashlight to see if anything is showing up on the screen.

My guess is the graphics card has failed.

If it was the graphics card, how would the external monitor be working?

yep, if it was bought in ireland then Eu consumer law claim all the way. Can get it done in Compu b, even if you didn't buy it there!

    Just to provide an update:

I dropped it into a local repair shop near by workplace yesterday evening.

They came back to me this morning saying that putting a new screen on it fixes the problem.

I said that's great and asked how much -

    500 euro !!!

I was also told that there is physical damage which shows on the casing and that might have caused the problem — there goes my consumer law case.

I'm shocked this costs so much. I then rang CompuB and they quoted 530 euro.

Does anyone know of any other places in Dublin I can try get a quote?

    I'm really stuck now

how bad is the physical damage?

    Hi,

There is small dents to the physical casing on the outside. Nothing major.

The repair guy said there is no evidence of physical damage to the internal components.

might still be worth getting an opinion from an apple dealer to see if it might be covered under consumer law.
