Speeding ticket - N4 Liffey Valley - 60kph?

Got a ticket in the post just now, N4 Liffey Valley. Was travelling city bound on N4. It says "exceeding special speed limit 60km/h" - is that a temporary limit? I don't remember any road works etc., and that stretch is 80kph as far as I know. Any ideas where it could be?

Just after liffey valley, a bit before you cross over the m50, the limit is 60 and they like to put a speed check in behind the bus stop there

It drops to 60kph from the Liffey Valley slip road/bridge until after you get over the M50 iirc. Oddly the other side of the road coming out of town is 80kph the whole way.

Perhaps it was just after these signs?

Arse, I see it now (just checked Google Street view). Think that's exactly where I got done.

Many's the time I've driven along there, never noticed it was 60kph to be honest. Live and learn.

I think its done as traffic joining from the liffey valley exit can find it very hard to get to the m50 southbound slip road at 80

The other sided is 60 as well from as far back as the esso petrol station.

As a matter of interest did you get penalty points too or just a cash fine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

Always assumed it was 80. The van on the way out is always parked at the Liffey Valley slip road/bus stop which is after the 80kph zone signs.. they must have nowhere to park in the 60kph zone.

Inbound they park in the buslane past junction 6(80), and at the bus stop's before(80) and after(60) the spot linked above. They also set up fixed cameras just after the bridge on the other side of the M50(60).

I once saw a lovely chap in a Merc get buzzed by all three one day.

Outbound its on the hatchings for the liffey valley(80) and mid way between junction 4 and 5(80).

Its rare not to see some form of speed check on that stretch of road.

3 points and 80 quid. Was doing 78kph in that zone (thinking it was an 80).

Photo of the reg, does that mean it was a van that got me?

Christ I'll watch myself there in future, but even 80 feels like crawling along there. I'll have a long line of traffic behind me at 60kph!!

The idiotic thing is that the limit doesn't actually drop to 60 until after the merge.

That junction is a clusterfcuk of epic proportions.

Or you could simply keep your eye out for the big white van with black stripes across the back windows, which is visible in all locations from a good distance away.

Well I didn't notice it you smart f**k, otherwise I'd have slowed down.

Sorry for stealing your thread, but does anyone know if the M50 (southbound) toll cameras measure speed and issue fines?

Why would you slow down if you thought you were below the limit already?

I hate it when people slap on the brakes when they see a Garda car or a van - even though they are travelling at a legal speed already.

same thing happened to me just before christmas in the very same spot... 8pm, empty road... 80eur - 3points

Natural instinct I suppose. Point is I didn't notice any van.

I've driven that road every day for 3 years at all hours of the day and night. Even if you were staring at the arse of the car in front, you would want to be doing some serious day dreaming to miss the rake of cars hitting their brakes on the sight of a van or bike parked up on that stretch. And of all the places in Dublin to not be paying attention, thats not a great place to do it. Plenty of cars coming onto the dual carriageway at 20-40 kph and pulling straight across three lanes to go southbound on the M50.

So yeah I am that guy. Proud of it too.

they put a speed van up on a kerb there last week and the week before , just inside the 60 zone , im waiting to see if I get a letter too. If ever I saw a blatant fish in a barrel revenue collection operation it was that van placement.

Where the **** are those vans Monday - Friday during evening rush hour?

I come up that slip road every day to merge, and it's a TOTAL struggle most days with people flying up, purposefully trying to not let people out. It's ridiculous.

There is also like 200-300 yards of Bus lane there, that ends for the M50 northbound slip lane which is also ridiculous. Plentys of cars get forced down the bus lane from people not allowing proper merging.

Can't say I've ever seen a van or anything there in the year I'm driving that route, and people plough through it in their dozens when I'm driving it.

I've actually changed my route in recent weeks to join the M50 Northbound from further up the N4, I take a different route from the office just to avoid that cluster**** of a merge.

Road was quiet when I was caught. I don't buy the "road safety" line at all. Never see speed checks being done outside the schools when cars and trucks are driving at dangerous speeds in a 50kph zone.

    +1

I on that M4 bit very rarely, never seen a speed camera, or knew about that limit. Usually coming out from LV. But occasionally might be coming in from the country.

I've seen the van parked at the esso filling station on the way out of the city, just where Chapelizod bypass enters Palmerstown.

Closest I've come to a serious accident on recent years is where you got done. One Sunday evening a dick joined from Liffey Valley, jumped the road markings and across two lanes, taking offence on those that beeped by brake using testing them. He had a car full of kids too.

I travel that road every day. When using it to go south bound on the m50 you get tailgated the minute you go into the over take lane 500 m or so back. And that's me doing 80! It's almost impossible to do 60 at that stretch without someone up your rear.

What I'm really waiting for is a Speed van to be stationed where it goes to 30 km/h when the road is coiled. While that would create uproar, does that mean it's not a valid sign, if so why is it up.

Problem there is you have slip roads for M50 Nbound, M50 Southbound and then City Centre.

For some reason rather then people slowing down realising they can change lanes easier, they speed up hoping to hop in front of someone for their lane change, see it every day.

The amount of people forced down the bus lane there is unreal...

Hi I use this road on occasions and I would be blown out of it if i went at 60km or 80km going on to the M50 South lane. What do I do let cars tailgate me and fluck them?!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

Think I'll just avoid that route all together now. I don't "think" I speed, but the way that road tends to go wouldn't be suprised if I creep over it when I come off the liffey valley merge.

According to the law I guess the answer is yes, but I get what you mean. It's a mess of a design and rather then people chilling out at 60 moving lanes, everyone hits 80 to try jump lane changes ahead

Its one of the few locations in the country where I agree with the limit. That said it should be 100km/h into 80km/h, not 80km/h into 60km/h. But then again, if you set it as 80km/h, you'd have people up your end wanting to do 100km/h. And for what gain? You have to slanter back to 60 or so to take the M50 south circle ramp. Time gained? Seconds.

Its down manners really. We all break the limit but if someone is doing the limit, we have no right rush them. I make no apologises for doing 60km/h there.

If that was the case I'd request the full picture. Thats about 30 metres away from the signs and the vans don't clock speeds 30 meters away, I believe its around a 100 meters.

I read this tread last week.
We'll do i feel stupid today. Driving down this road today looking to go south bound. I didn't know the road. I expected the the exit to be on the left with a flyover going south bound. Then saw it was on the right. I needed to switch lanes but there was a car flying up the outside lane, ignoring me indicating. I pulled out and put my foot down a bit so he wouldn't rear end me. Looked up to see the van. I think i was doing about 85. I'm expecting a letter this week.

Annoyed at it. I slowed the guy down to transfer the speeding fine onto myself! Its a revenue trap.

Indicating doesn't guarantee you can change lanes. You alone are responsible for ensuring that you can execute the maneuver, indicate your intention and then move lane. This should be done so that you do not impede other faster/slower traffic, causing them to adjust for your maneuver.

We've all been in situations that we have been in the wrong lane. But if you can't get in safely you should continue and try get back via another route.

We refer to these guys and girls as sweepers. They clean the road for you and give you plenty of heads up. Wanna drive fast? Have a slightly faster person ahead of you and know every car behind you, checking each as you pass and ramp check.

Always amazes me when you have someone trying to be brash and brave, and yet totally singling themselves out for some points.

I saw the new van location in person last Thursday. Its about 50 feet from the 60 signs so I'd really push for the full picture. I really doubt they are clocking peoples speed in the 60 zone.

I call them Speed Gimps. The guy that always has to overtake and lead. Then you just sit back 10 lengths behind him, driving at your own speed (he'll match you! No way he's going to let you lead) and it gives you a few seconds head start if you see a camera flash ahead or sudden brake lights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,663 ✭✭✭✭Mental Mickey

It's a 60kph speed limit on the n4. It's ridiculous, especially when you come off the M50.

You nearly have to jam in the brakes when you come off the junction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,933 ✭✭✭daheff

Saw this guy out yesterday too... reckon I was under speed limit there. In fairness to people its a kinda bad place to put limit signs...you are either watching cars merging from the left or trying to get into right lane to go onto M50.
Speed signs should be a good bit back (just before the slip to exit to LV).

But theres no way the guy could be catching you in the 60km zone based off where hes parked...the camera is just inside the zone, so would be tough to catch you there. I suppose they could argue theres no way you could slow below 60km based off your speed /where they caught you...but don't think that would stand up in court!

It's a while since I have driven over that stretch of the N4 can't believe it is 60 there. I it was 60 alright crossing palmerstown, did not know it applied on the bridge too.
