    Hi all,
Im trying to decide which broadband to get with vodafone,
If i get simply broadband ie. no phone service included then does this mean that my phone line will not be active and if i ever want to move to another provider, ill have to get the line reactivated?
    Thanks

You'll have a line, can take incoming calls. The broadband uses the phone line and you need a phone number for it.

    Thanks for that,
I thought vodafone said that i would not have a working phone line and that confused me,
    Thanks for clearing that up

That's wrong. Simply broadband doesn't support any voice services.

Ok. I have simply broadband, have a working phone line, maybe its an anomaly but its what I have.
Calls can come in or go out. Always use it to ring my mobile if I can't find it. Never answer though

Do you know if sky multi room will work with your simply bb when it's in its engaged state? I'm considering changing to a bb only package but have sky multi room which needs the phone line.

They say it won't when they changed the terms in December, you can't even make emergency calls.

SADSL or Solo ADSL which is what they're selling, or should be selling, means you get a dummy number(no local area code), which gives you 50v on the line but no ability to dial.

JCA: nope, the box wont be able to dial sky and locate itself.

I dont know why this is, probably regulatory or legacy reasons, but SADSL gets a proper PSTN line on a dummy number while SVDSL is like you describe, DSLAM only.

Nobody does it, but you can get a landline from eircom or vodafone and then pay a third party as your calls provider. Kinda like using a VPN on your internet connection. These call routes are added at the exchange level. If vodafone wanted to they could just add a dud route to your circuit and make it impossible to call. Or they could just use the AAA systems to disable the line for phone services, should have the same effect other than you being able to dial 1701, 1901 etc.

Just to point out, that this naked VDSL that Vodafone sell is an official product that Eircom wholesale sell and you can read about it in the docs on the Eircom Wholesale site.

Eircom Retail also sell this product, though they don't advertise it on their website, you have to be in the know.

So perhaps these issues actually stem from Eircom wholesale and the process for naked VDSL not being properly thought out yet.

On the other hand Vodafone support is very poor. My parents got Vodafone VDSL installed (full version with phone line and calls) and it worked for one week, then both VDSL and phone service stopped working completely for 6 weeks! Yes not even a dial tone, no access to 999 (a worry as my parents are elderly) and it took them 6 weeks to sort it out!!!

All of this worries me with Vodafones involvement in the ESB FTTH project!

I got Simply Broadband in last October, and it had the phone with it, which I didn't need, or want.

However, a few weeks ago, I was upgraded to Fibre, and the phone line part of the service is now gone dead.
