Nexus 7 gone to complete sh!t since updating to Lollipop

I was looking forward to the update since I'd seen how clean and smooth it looked on YouTube videos by tech channels but since updating to it a few weeks ago it's been head wrecking. It runs like absolute sh!t on my nexus 7 (2012) it seems. I mostly use Chrome browser and the amount of times it's frozen and exited and also actually properly frozen the tablet to reboot is absolutely rage inducing.

The few apps I use also seem to be worse than before. It worked perfectly and smoothly with few crashes before this update. What can I do? Just wait for the next update that sorts this out? I do not understand how an update is released that makes it worse than it was before, what is the point of releasing that? I seriously feel like stomping it!

    Factory reset.

It'll clean out the junk left over from updating that causes problems.

+1 could barely use the thing until I did a factory reset - now *touch wood* it's much better!

Funny timing, because I almost lost my mind yesterday at how slow my 2012 Nexus 7 had gotten.

I didn't do a factory reset, but did do a clear out of unused apps and I think most importantly, got rid of Facebook and Messenger. The speed improvement has been incredible.

Never installed FB on it but I'll probably factory reset it and try to delete as much apps as possible. Gonna be a painnin the ass reinstalling everything and logging back in

I downgraded back to 4.4.2 as the factory resetting got annoying and was only any good for a copy of days on lollipop. Much better now on the previous version and I just have to remember not to hit the upgrade button that is now permanently in the notification bar.

If you’re on Kitkat you can try a handy app called lagfix (fstrim) run it occasionally and it should reduce the lag. You need to be rooted for this but I have found it helps. There was a list of tricks going around on XDA that were supposed to help but lagfix was definitely on it and I found it helped.

I upgraded to 5.0.2 in the hopes it would fix a lot of the legacy issues but I think on balance it made it worse. It went from being sluggish on 4.4.2 to downright unusable on lollipop (after the initial 2 week period of usability on lollipop it slowly ground to a halt).

I downgraded and had a look around for other options. I ended up going with a custom rom. I followed this http://teknovenus.com/wordpress/speed-up-nexus-7-f2fs-slimkat/. By changing the file-system to a more N7 friendly version it is supposed to reduce lag. It’s too early for me to say if this will be a long term solution ( I'm only a week on the new rom and file system) but so far so good.
