    Hi Folks,
Asked my mechanic today about changing timing belt on Avensis 00 1.6 petrol. He was adamant that it had a chain so wouldn't need changing. Previously I got another mechanic to change the water pump and belt so I'm a bit confused. A quick google and it seems that you can buy belts online??? Am I missing something?

    If it's VVT-i its chain.

VVT-i came on the late 2000 facelift.

The water pump is driven by the aux belt on the vvti chain driven engine afaik so that still makes sense :-)

    Open the bonnet.

If you see plastic cover like this:

    It's chain driven.

If there's no cover and you see 4A-FE on it:

    It's belt driven.

Yeah 4A-FE it is. Tks for the info guys. Think I'll go to a different mechanic though. At 190k and going well so don't want to loose my engine over something that easy to maintain.
