Taking shoes off when invited to a friends house

    What's the general consensus on this, I don't think it's appropriate to invite people to your house and them ask them to take their shoes off, especially when they don't turn the heating on!. I understand if you take your shoes off when you're at home in your own house but when someone lands at the front door and they have to take off their shoes???
