Hey guys, the search for a new car continues. Thought I had it narrowed down to a golf gtd but was a passenger in an s40 earlier and really liked it. Anybody know anything about the d4 s40? There are a couple for sale at the moment well within my budget and they seem to have 177bhp which would be plenty for me. Thanks, Mark.

Hi mark. I wouldn't be a mechanic by any means but i currently have a 1.6 diesel s40 2005.. Super car to drive great on fuel but not the most reliable. I have mine a year and I had numerous problems with it. They are a very expensive car to fix. If a wheel bearing goes it's the whole hub to be changed costing approx €300 fitted. They also have a warning message of anti skid service and break failure which I got fixed at €670 it was an ecu problem. They love to go through tires a lot I'm on my third set in just over a year. Apart from things that can go wrong they are a lovely car to drive but only if you get the full spec on it.

Don't be comparing a 1.6 PSA diesel engined S40 to a 2.0 litre 5 cylinder D4. They are totally different beasts and reliability is chalk and cheese.

Thank you both for your feedback. I'm hoping since im looking at 2011s that they'll have ironed out most of the minor issues at that stage. There's very limited information regarding the 5 cylinder engine though. Is it considered a reliable unit? I'd be looking an auto most likely.

Yes it is, it's Volvo's own diesel engine as opposed to the PSA 1.6 (D2) and 2.0 litre (D3), its a smaller version of the very good 2.4 litre D5 unit. These units are very reliable and pack a good punch performance wise. A D4 S40 is rare enough to find in Ireland too.

Thanks Bazz, I am going to drive one tomorrow and see what it's like. I would be getting a lot more for a lot less money than in the equivalent year golf gtd or e90.

Hey folks, just an update here. Picked up a grey 2011 s40 d4 se lux geartronic last week. It's a lot quicker than I expected which was a nice surprise as I couldn't fully push it on the test drive. In fact at certain points it feels quicker than my old mk5 gti! It's also very comfortable (seats are amongst the best I've ever had in any car except those in my old cl7 euro r) and its also very economical. The difference coming from my 2009 focus 1.8tdci is like night and day! Diesels really have come such a long way! Thanks for all advice and any questions are welcome. Mark.

If that's an original Irish car, then it's probably the only S40 D4 originally registered in Ireland, and I ordered it.

Titanium Grey with Calcite/Umbria interior and the optional Bluetooth?

Customer was entitled to an S40 SE LUX auto with at least 150ps on their grade, and when I went to order the D3 version Volvo were suffering engine shortages of the D3, so added the D4 to the price list instead (at a higher price). Everyone went for D2's instead, but I ordered a V50 and the S40 at the same time. S40 was cancelled by the customer, so I believe it had a very easy life not far from the supplying dealer, for a couple of years.

That's the exact car!! Do you work in fleet cars R.O.R? What a small world! I was expecting it to be a UK import due to the engine! Had been looking for something with a bit of power but comfortable and cheap to run and this ticked all the boxes!!

That's a decent enough price. Car looks great in the picture. Think when I'm going to change I'll be looking at a D4 engine rather than any of the rest.

What are you driving at the moment emmet? Having driven an e90 320d prior to buying the volvo, the engine in the volvo is way ahead of the n47 in terms of torque, sound etc

Just have a 1.6 Mazda 3. Had a deal done last year on a 09 320d with the M Pack but decided to hold off for the time.
Had been looking at Volvos at the time as well but none were catching my eye.
The D4 high spec sounds great !!
