Just a thought to what was the best start to a round you had before it all went wrong.

In general it takes a few holes to warm up when I play but i was +1 after five holes before it all exploded after one of the playing partners commented how well i was playing.

Have been -2 through 4 playing off 14 last year. Needless to say ended up shooting to my handicap which is always the goal but was deflated walking off the 18th after the start.

Good question. I was 2 under par in Castlemartyr last year at the half way stage. We were flying taking us 1 1/2 hours to get through 9. Ran into a society and the back 9 took 3 hours to complete the back. Finished 9 over par overall.

I was so disgusted by myself when I finished as it was going to be the best round of my life. Totally in the zone.

Ive started reading Bob Rotella and another book by Robin Sieger about mental toughness. Maybe I should try and implement their advice of "staying in the moment, and not getting ahead of yourself".

Royal Harare, I was 1 under after 3 (2 birdies and 1 bogey). Then I sobered up.

I had been at an Octoberfest party the night before. Went to bed a 3 got up at 6 and on the tee at 7:30. By hole 6 it was starting to heat up and I was starting to suffer. I was so relieved to find out that after 9 holes we went in for breakfast. A big breakfast, a big beer and a large J&B set me up to survive the 2nd 9 holes.

I was -3 through 15 at the K club (Smurfit) in a comp........I took a seven at the par 4 16th, five at the par 3 17th and bogeyed the last. Still wake up screaming from time to time.......

5 birdies in first 8 holes including a hat trick start....hope to spend the next 40 years trying to repeat it.

Had 6 pars to start this morning, was delighted with that, probably close to if not my best 'start'

I was level par after 14 in a monthly medal last year. Went bogey, double bogey, bogey, par to finish four over. I was beaten on a count back quare sick.

-1 after 13 in Dunmurry Springs
Level par after 13 Curragh, both during winter rules, so not fully relevant.

It's whatever you want it to be.

-2 through 11 holes playing off 6. Finished +1, still my best gross in competition.

Started with an eagle and then a birdie on 4 - was 3 under after 4 - ridiculous for me, as not a man who scores well in the negative direction.

I don't want to mention Mt Juliet again :P - but only I'll know how close I came chipping in for -4 after 5 - lol - missed the one back.
Fell apart then - didn't enjoy the experience and never want to do it again. :D

Did all that towards the end of last season - so maybe something on the cards this year - maybe , but some of that stuff is just freaky and part luck in a way. (IMO)

I've had an under par front nine - I guess that is it.

Playing off 16 and went to the sixth at level par.
The 6th is a par 3 with water in front and big bunkers behind.
    Walked off 11 over :o

I started with an eagle followed by 5 pars, I was +1 for nine, went into a hazard on the 8th.

Managed to finish the round on 6 over which is my best score to date!

I usually make a hems of one of the first 4 holes at my home club, so I was delighted to be - 1on the 5th tee, blanked the 5th, blanked the 6th and that was that. Don't even know what I finished that round with.

Birdie, par, par, par, birdie, par, bogey. Should've walked in then....

portumna captains prize last year off 14, started with 2 birdies and was 1 over after 11 holes, and then got to the par5 12th saying to myself "just keep it handy, nice and relaxed" tee off hit tree at the corner and into the forest 2nd attempt behind said tree, finally got it near the green and thined the wedge into the forest behind the green, walked of with a 12 and couldn't recover for the rest of the round..

Playing off 14 last summer in club medal competition was -2 through 4, then came two difficult par 5's but was only 4 over after 9 and finished 7 over. Still best ever round was onnly 1 putt of breaking 80 :'( This year hopefully

Great idea for a thread. Funny enough I don't recall any spectacular starts to a round, other than an eagle on the 1st in summer 2013. It was only a 9 hole comp and played the other 8 to handicap. Normally I'm a slow starter, the good scores come when I settle into the zone and manage to stay there.

From looking at my stats, my best start to a round was only 2 weeks ago. I was +3 after 12 and that included a double on the 3rd hole. Finished the round at +8, a very good round but disappointing finish.

Can't find the rounds in my stats but I have definitely played both nines on my course in +1. On both occasions the other nine was poor enough. :(

Started birdie, hole-in-one, many years ago in a comp at Black Bush. 3 under after 2. Was aged 16 at the time and promptly shat myself. Can't remember what I finished but I do recall being peed off for weeks!

+1 after 12 on my home course and finished 4 over. Was winter rules though.

+3 through 14 in Castlemartyr last summer. Went double, double, par, double home to walk off three better than handicap but feeling like 23 worse !!

Started a nine hole competition at my home club last year with five birdies over the first seven holes off six. Scorecard read 3, 6, 2, 2, 4, 3, 3. Finished -2 for 23 points so chuffed is an understatement.

4 birdies in the first 4 holes. didnt really fall apart though as I finished -3 for the round :)

Ive birdied the first 3 holes a couple of times. those rounds usually fall apart though lol ;)

Level par after 15 bogeyed last 3 driving well on the day, last 3 t-shots into trouble

-4 after 5 was my best. Most satisfying feeling was how comfortable I was and continued to give myself plenty of chances for the rest of the round, finished -6. Accomplished twice in my life.

Its been so long since I have showed anything close to this in the past few years. I'm closer mid 80's than 60's now, I hate golf!!!

4 under through 8, was 2 under on 15 and finished with 4 bogeys for a 73, nett 60. Never got close since.

Last year, I had five pars in a row for the first time ever (off 15) and they came on the first five holes. Sixth is index 2, a long par-four, so I wasn't displeased with a bogey. Can't remember now for the life of me what I did to blank the seventh - a good thing I suppose.

Finished with 38, it was the final qualifying event of the year so I got a small cut at least.

    -2 after 12 holes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,191 ✭✭✭Dr_Colossus

-2 after 9 in Portmarnock Links a couple of years ago, the 9 front comprised of 4 birdies, 4 pars and 1 double. Back nine was a disaster, picked up two more birdies for my most ever birdies in a round but most of the other scores were bodies and doubles and finished the round on +5 I think.

Hole in one on the first hole of Blackwater Par 3 course. I should've turned around there and then and gone home.

    -1 for 4 holes.
