Motor Tax & Change of Ownership

I have just purchased a car that will be out of tax at the end of the month (Saturday) - now the Citizens Info website says that I can't pay the tax until the change of ownership has gone through (it is just being posted off today).

Is there a 1 month grace period on the tax - i.e. can I drive the vehicle in March and pay the tax as soon as I am able to (when I receive the change of ownership in the mail)?

Once I pay the tax, can I drive the vehicle or do I have to wait for a new disc in the mail before it can go on the road?

    Cheers,

    ryan

there is no grace period. Its 2 seperate offences non display and not having. The non display you may get away with if you dont park in a public place. However the not having its up to the guards discretion if they stop you. Even if you have paid if no disc you can still be done for non display!

By the way you buy it saturday you have to tax for february too! Make sure invoice is dated Sunday!

    Thanks.

The problem is that I can't buy the tax until the change of ownership has gone through - which means waiting for that in the mail and then buying the tax, then waiting for the disc :/

If you were to buy the car on the first of march which is sunday and the seller allowed you to take the appropriately dated log book with you then you can head into your local motor tax office first thing Monday morning and transfer ownership and walk out with an up to date tax disc.

Yeah I just spoke to the motor tax office and they told me I could go in with the change of ownership and do it on the spot! D'oh!

Now trying to contact the seller to get him to not post the change!

I had the same situation recently, the tax was out but the dealer was going to tax it and then send off the paperwork. I bought the car on a Friday so I had nothing over the weekend and I also did not have the new insurance disc so I made a little notice on my computer and stuck it on the windscreen explaining the situation and the date I'd just bought the car etc along with my old insurance disc as I thought this might look better than simply having no paperwork on the windscreen. I now have all the correct paperwork sitting at home on my table but the car is in the car park at work for a week or so while I'm away working. Fingers crossed it will still be there when I get back...

It's legal to go around without an insurance disc for up to 10 days following authentication of a policy.

You can also tax it online at motortax.ie. You have to wait for the change of ownership to go through (usually 3 days after the VLC is posted) but you don't have to wait for the new VLC to arrive.
BTW there's no point in asking the seller to delay posting the VLC (to avoid paying tax for Feb) if you've already dated it in February.
