If the towing vehicle is 2004, or older, you can use a flat-bed trailer, after 2004 must be a box-trailer. See www.rsa.ie for specifics on trailer size, weight, etc

    No.

    It all changed in 2013.

The rules are the trailer must be of closed box design at least the height and width of the towing car, have 30x 4" concrete blocks inside (800kg), must be at least 8ft long interior. Simple terms, a horse box or large box trailer. The towing vehicle must be able to tow all that weight too!

Trust me I know as I sat the BE test last year. .

Try a local driving school. One of my local schools had a horse box with the required blocks in it, so I did a pre-test lesson and used their box for the test. Much handier.

I stand corrected. The pre-2004 vehicle option must have been discontinued. There were indeed a lot of such changes introduced in 2013.

For example, I passed my C test in 2003 (no weight needed in the truck) and my C+E in 2014 (weight required in rigid truck+trailer).

Where did you take your B+E test btw? How did you find it? Did you take many lessons beforehand?

I considered doing my B+E lessons/test, but opted for C+E lessons/test instead, using this combination of truck + trailer (a 'larger' EB test if you will) :Dhttp://www.aclearsteerdriving.com/?page_id=46

I did my BE test in Mullingar. I applied immediately to do my test after I got the BE learner permit, got a date 6 weeks after, I just did two lessons one in my car, an auto, but borrowed a friends manual to do a combined second lesson/test with the instructors trailer.
