Anyone got any on the road experience of the new model Ford Ranger? Might be upgrading to one and was wondering what the real life experience has been. I've spoke to one or two owners and no problems so far but just looking for a few more opinions.

Currently in 08 auto Navara comfortable but hard on fuel (older engine). Don't tow with it so dont need the larger model engines. Mostly on road driving but do require 4x4 and good ground clearance for access to some sites even in Summer.

I've driven the Mazda BT-50's a bit. Same vehicle....different badge. Ive driven an actual Ranger but not for long.

They have plenty of power and nice controls, dash etc. I've only been in workmate pickups. No carpet etc...

The 6 speed manual is a bit of an adjustment from a regular 5 speed hilux. More power and closer gear ratios. 1st is pretty low in 2H so good for off road and towing.
The 6 speed auto is pretty good too. sometimes a bit of a shock when it drops back a gear when you put the foot down accelerating around 30kmh. Puts you in the back of the seat.

Good safety rating too. Our work vehicles that are BT50's or Rangers don't need internal roll cage as they are strong enough without them.

Fuel wise they are pretty good, 11-12L/100km on 100km decent dual roads (in Australia)

I find the bonnet profile is quite high on them and it feels like its hard to see over.

Suspension wise it felt a bit more stiff than the hilux we have but in saying that...I wouldn't be surprised if the hilux rear leafs were F'd.

Guys that have them in the field every day have said they produce rattles a bit faster than the hilux but thats just hear say.

Pretty comfortable cabin even in workmate spec.

Cheers Pete. I dont think I'll manage to get it into the outback anytime soon!!

The Navara is auto and while it is so handy to drive, its a dreadful box. Needs another 3 or four gears in there. it just roars and goes nowhere. I think the next one will be a manual.

It's also a bit of a mobile office so the extra comforts are welcome when on the move all the time.
