I'm in the same boat; have been dying my light-medium brown hair dark plum/auburn for 12 years and now I'm craving my natural colour. I went to the hairdresser and had the darker bits lifted with some bleach but the red tones are worse than ever.

Red tones are very difficult to budge if you use permanent colours; definitely talk to a hairdresser but I know myself I'm going to have to simply let it all grow out.

Sorry, that wasn't much help! I'd say talk to your hairdresser because I don't think there's much you could do yourself bar bleaching your head off and dying it again.

Have either of you tried massaging ketchup into your hair leaving it half an hour then rinsing it out?

I did this with a red dye job that was way too vibrant and it toned it right down.

Sounds a bit mad but it worked

You need to find a good colourist that understands the difference between a colour remover and a colour reducer. A colour reducer doesn't contain bleach.

If it's permanent colour you've used, they should be able to remove the artificial colour molecules without using any bleach. It probably won't be cheap!

Don't use the supermarket equivalent as they're not the same and you will probably end up back at square one.

I had my hair stripped which is them essentially them scrubbing the red out of your hair. Takes a few hours and isn't cheap. It was the only thing I could do to get the red out of my hair.

Going by the colour wheel you will probably need a colour with a blue green undertone to it i think.. but consult with a hairdresser. I'm definitly not claiming to be a person with knowledge of this.
I had blue stuck in my hair from shave or dye and the hairdresser had to use a red to fix it before she could put a chocolate brown over.
