Lake Bled & somewhere else

    Hello!

Looking for advice on a summer trip this august-three females in our twenties are hoping to go to lake bled for some camping and hiking and such. We have about ten days which is probably too much for just lake bled and ljubljana so we're thinking of flying in somewhere else (italy? croatia?), spending some time there and then getting a car or train to ljubljana and lake bled.

Has anyone done anything similar before? Would you recommend anywhere else to go? We're on a bit of a budget-not exactly broke but looking for places that are relatively cheap or good value.

    Thanks in adance

    :)

    Bled is fantastic! Great choice!
Croatia may be worth a look. Would be cheaper than Italy anyway.
You can get trains from Ljubljana to Split (via Zagreb).
From there, you can get a Ferry to Brac or Hvar, or just travel north up along the coast instead.
You could fly back home from Zadar in north Croatia too... Ryanair flights from there are usually pretty cheap.
    enjoy!

If you want to stay in Slovenia and do some active holidays then I would check Soca Valley for wild water rafting, hiking and actually some quite good WW1 museums and sites.

Bled itself is as dull as they come for night life or at least it was in my time. If you want to be surrounded by less pensioners and families feeding ducks then stay in Ljubljana for a night or two. Ljubljana is a great town for just sitting in the cafes and being lazy and if you are there in the summer then head out to Ljubljanica river for an evening/night promenade. Everyone is in the cafes and clubs can be quite deserted. If you are on a budget the prices around there are the highest. Castle is worth a visit, national gallery is ok but more interesting when some guest exhibition is on. But Ljubljana us a small city and you can do all sight seeing in a day. Shopping can be ok but personally I find shopping centres on the outskirts better. For budget accommodation hostel Celica is interesting (former army prison), there are a lot of alternative clubs in that area. In reality that means a lot of students (not so much in the summer) and bad punk bands.

I don't know where you plan to fly but there are few airports that could work. Most of flights will have to go through London. Direct option could be Venice and you could check the city itself (do not go for a coffee on Piazza San Marco, it is crazily expensive). It can be a bit smelly in the summer. You could fly to Pula which is on IstrIan coast in Croatia and maybe cheaper and not as nice as Dalmatian coast. Flying to Krk is another option. I heard fairly good stuff about go opti but I never tried them so I don't know how reliable or cheap they are for airport transports.

Edit: every self respecting Slovenian would drag you to Postojna cave. It's quite cool if you don't mind a bit of dampness. But in reality I think 10 days is a bit much for Slovenia. Btw if you are in the area around Bled then lake Bohinj is quite nice and if you find the coast too hot, no to bad for swimming. When it is not raining.
