Not sure if anyone saw this pop up on JTG's Facebook page, but 56 runners ran under 15 minutes in the Armagh 5k last night. In fact, all but 9 of the 106 participants ran under 16 minutes (men's results). Some notable results: Johnathon Brownlee (of Triathlon fame) ran 14:00.13 for third place. Mark Kenneally was 19th, for 14:20. Darragh Rennicks - 14:35. Seems like a pretty remarkable achievement and certainly points to one fastest 5k road races in Ireland, if not.... um.. Anyone know of any faster 5k road races?

The course is 4 laps of just over 1km and is measured by Jones counter (just to put any speculation to bed). Has anyone run it? Assuming you meet the entrance criteria (sub 17 5k time), anyone know if this is pretty open entry? Seems like a great opportunity to hit a fantastic time.

This tends to be the top 5k road race in the country every year however doesn't get a whole lot of advertisement (in Ireland but Internationally actually fairly well know), Its a Brooks sponsored event to the best of my knowledge so many of their UK/Ireland based athletes tend to get enlisted.

To best of my knowledgement its open bar the entry standard

Gleedog was actually up there this year for the 3k and may have more info

Worth going to watch these boys run, the pace is something to behold! Brownlee pushed the pace the whole way and certainly isn't afraid to hurt. It was like a 5k sprint! Brilliant setting in Armagh City Centre with a slight incline and decline in every lap..great atmosphere!

Yes, only requirement for the 5K is Sub17 but in all honesty to get the benefit of the fast runners you need to be running Sub 16 IMO.

Stacked results and some run from Johnathon Brownlee. Am I right in thinking that Alistair is actually the better runner between the two of them?

Yeah Alistair is better runner of the 2, has a PB of low 28mins for 10k on the track i think.

Edit: 28.32 and change track 10k PB.

Yeah, as someone at the wrong end of 15:xx I'd be towards the back of the field, but reckon having 40 runners between 15:00 and 15:59 would be particularly useful in getting the most out of a runner.
More generally: are the results so stacked because it's such a good field, or an extremely fast course/layout? Are there other 'premium road races' like this one, where the field is so well stacked?

I've run the 3k before, it's a cracking evenings entertainment. All the races run around 1k square so you are never far from the action. Once you hit the standard anyone can enter, I hope to do it myself next year.

Both IMO, the course is very fast, a very flat 1k loop. Also, the field is stacked so there are loads of runners at every pace. It's funny I've seen guys run 16:40 up there and they just look silly compared to anyone else. Brooks pour a lot of money into this and are able to pull in good athletes, lots of Brooks-Hanson runners from the US come over to run it (and the Rás na hEireann as well which is usually the Sunday after the race).

I remember back when I was a total track novice, and really only a 17min 5k road runner I just missed out on getting an entry in for the 1st IMC in greystones (my local track). I showed up to watch the race, if I remember correctly the slowest person was 15.30! I dodged a bullet missing the entry deadline that day ha!

As pconn says probably both but I think mainly its the standard on athlete. Another factor is that the loop is well sheltered with buildings therefore reducing the wind factor.

The guy who came 4th used to be in my club, until he was "stolen" by another local club. He got invited to run a few years ago possibly based on a time run in the UK universities champs or something and has been claiming a new pb each year since.

Incredible. How could you not run your best in an environment like that?
Definitely heading up 'Norf next year and will try and peak for this race.

I sense a Boardsie Road Trip :). Looks like a quality race and if I'm confident of at least running sub16, would love to head up there next year

Can't think of a higher class athletics event in Ireland. Anything close to this anywhere else?

Hope they don't all land at the North East Runners Patsy Kelly 5K on April 18th. €50 bonus for sub 15 mins.
