Advice on car under 3000

    Hi all,

Any advice on a car under 3000 Eur, reliable engine for long weekend travel rather than in the city so not for everyday use. It will be old with that budget but been living abroad and insurance is very high as only 1 year insured in Ireland hence limited budget

Looking at Ford Fiestas (zeitec) and Volkswagen Golfs or Polos from the years 2000 to 2003 with under 100,000 mile (I know difficult for that year) is there other reliable makes I should be looking at like Skodas or others? What are Peugots like? Any advice much appreciated. Ideally want a 1.2 0r 1.4 l engine,

    Thanks M

Toyota Corolla, more reliable than most of the stuff you mentioned. They are also quite nippy for 1.4 litre.

    For example:

    +1 on the corolla suggestion.

You would pick up a 2006 307 1.4 for about that, private sale so 3k would get it, really comfortable cars and the later ones have all the electrical issues the earlier models suffered from sorted out.

Thanks want to go through dealer rather than private sale though not sure what one is safer! Found it hard to see any Toyota Corolla's around that price range but will keep looking

Opel Astra '03 for €2k 95k miles on clock, 1.4l, Taxed til June and NCT'd til Jan '16! I have had zero trouble with it - just looking for a change! I'd recommend the astra, based on my experience with it. Solid drive.

    Good luck!

    :-)

Not sure what sort of warranty or cover you are expecting on a €3k car from a dealer but it will not be much. You will get better value from buying privately.

At this price level a dealers margin is a huge chunk of the price. You get less car for your money.
Buy privately but get the car checked.
