Hey everyone, I've noticed many posts asking for laptops, so I hope its cool to get some advice on what would be a good fit for me.

Just to be up front about something, I've really had my mind set on a Thinkpad T420 for a while but fear that model may be a bit out of date, so any thoughts on that appreciated also.

    Purpose:
    Work/college

    Screen size preference:
15ish would be good,17 is a bit too much. I would prefer to go smaller and more portable but I often need two or more programs sharing the screen. That said, I've lugged around a 17'' for a few years and it was a pain.

    OS preference:
    Win

    Gaming requirements:
Not too pushed about this, but may need mid-tier gpu for rendering, maybe a Quadro?(I'll admit I don't know if they are pricey).
I have a PC for regular gaming.

    Other performance requirements:
Need to be able to handle Unity3D, Photoshop,
maybe 3dsMax(light use of this one). Sometimes Unity and one of the others at the same time. I just don't want it to chug when running an unoptimized scene in Unity.

    Brand preferences:
I once owned an IBM thinkpad and it was the best laptop I've ever owned. I know things are different now but I would like something I can quickly whip out in college/work that has a comfortable keyboard (I do a lot of coding).

I loved the simple blocky form factor of the old thinkpad I had (T90?). I like simplicity. Otherwise I loved having a matt finish on the screen but those were gone out of favor years ago so I won't get my hopes up today. I generally dislike glossy materials but it seems like all laptops are glossy now.

I would prefer battery life over high performance.
    Build quality over gimmicks.

Screen should be decent, but doesn't need to be higher res than 1080p
Definitely need a great keyboard a la the IBM/lenovo Tseries . Needs to be enjoyable to code on the go.
Don't really care about touch pad or audio. Not too pushed about having a touchscreen either.
Plenty of USB ports would be a cool bonus but not that big of a deal.

Can you get laptops without optical drives these days?
I haven't used one in years and didn't get one when I built my current PC (2013), I haven't missed it.

That's all the info I can think of for now.

    Thanks to anyone who helps!

    Blob.

*For some reason I can't edit my post at the moment, sorry*

I should have mentioned, obviously with the PS and other RAM heavy stuff I want at least 8GB RAM.

    Cheers.
