USA work on an Australian Passport

I'm living in Brisbane at the moment and was chatting to an Ozzie the other day that said with the new laws, they can go to america to look for work on an Australian passport and if they find work are given a green card through some new laws that were passed recently. They are heading off there in a couple of weeks. I'm not that far off citizenship here, Is there any truth to this? Are Australian passports favoured over Irish passports?

I did read something about Australian oil workers being in demand in the Houston area. Is that the field they're in?

Also, if you're close to getting Australian citizenship, and this is just a chance for a US work visa as opposed to a green card, then you might want to wait until you get the Aussie passport before bailing out.

Australian Citizens have access to an E3 visa that lets them apply for specialised roles related to their degree/high levels of related work experience in the States. I don't think Irish citizens have access to those

Yeah, I've had a look and it seems if you have an Australian passport and a bachelors degree you can basically go the states and look for work, if you find a job you can get an E3 visa which will allow you to work in the states. I'm about a year away from my Ozzie passport so I guess that will be my route. Nice. Surprised its only Australia that qualifies for this....

Its not a surprise, Australia has extremely close ties with the US as part of the ANZUS pact. They have allot of bilateral visa that allot of other countries are not privy to. Ireland has been trying to lobby for a visa similar to E3 but has been unsuccessful as of yet.

The original reason for the visa was Australia sending troops to help with the "war on terror".
