If there's ever a movie that stands the test of time its Point Break

Its got everything you want in an action movie....

its got Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves in their prime

its got Gary Busey as his bubbling best

its got surfing, its got sky diving, its got car chases, its got a brilliant foot chase between swayze and reeves > the best in movie history imo

its got babes, its got Hendrix's 6 becomes 9

god damn it.. its even got the Red Hot Chilli Peppers doing kung fu, what more do you want??

yes i know its cheesey as hell but its good cheese its stilton blue

i've watched it umpteenth times and i never tire of it,

    100% pure adrenaline!

I appreciate it greatly and concur with you that the chase scene is up there with the best ever.
    Pat Swayze = bad film.

Ah now. He's a bad-ass bank robbing, surfing, skydiving, extreme sports dude in Point Break.

for a bonus point (without using Google) can you name another cult classic which has Hendrix's's's 'If 6 were 9' in the track list.

Sometimes I put on my wetsuit and re-enact surf scenes from the movie in the bath.

    It was the matrix reloaded.

" And Keaneu Reeves brings his own unique form of autism to the role....."

    I didn't really like it.

Skydiving and surfing are not things us normal human beings have to do to survive in our normal everyday life, it's pie in the sky TV, much like Cliffhanger, Terminal Velocity, Vertical Limit, The Eiger Sanction and any music video featuring The Beach Boys.

Give me an ordinary Joe Soap action hero any day, Roy Scheider in Jaws, Bruce Willis in Die Hard, Barry Newman in Vanishing Point.

Those, my friends, are movies worthy of our mortal appreciation and respect.

22 years. Man, L.A. has changed a lot during that time. The air got dirty and the sex got clean.

just one of many many great lines, love Point Break!!

Action movies are generally one of my least favourite genres, but even I love Point Break. It's an endlessly rewatchable flick.

Back in the day, I was working in Tallaght and had a student card. So admission to the UCI cinema was only 2.50. I went to see Point Break every day after work for two weeks. Even after 12 viewings I hadn't had enough. The surfing and sky diving scenes were breathtaking on the big screen. Video, DVD and now Blu Ray still don't do them justice.

This film has everything, amazing camera work, brilliant stunts, rocking soundtrack and of course an incredibly quotable screenplay. It is THE quintessential action movie.

Great movie Patrick Sawyze did his own stunt work and actually did the sky dive for real!
Some great quotes "Young Dumb and full of cum!", "Back off Warchild, seriously!"
Always have to watch it when it comes on tv, they were talking of re-making it, God I hope they don't!

Fifth Element? Still my favourite movie of all times. It ages well and still awesome!

    Yeah its worth a look.

another goodie from the era is heat.

one to avoid is true romance - which makes you think its going to be fvcking awesome with an amazing line up of Christoper Walken, Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, but turns out to be a diamond studded unmentionable item.

Pappas: Let me tell you something, Harp. I was in this bureau while you were still popping zits on your funny face and jacking off to the lingerie section of the Sears catalog. But there's something I've learned in all my years...

Ben Harp: Why don't you astonish me, sh!tbrains.

Pappas: [Pappas punches Harp] Respect for my elders!

    luv it :D

Have to wholeheartedly disagree with you about True Romance. That's a great film, the scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken where Hopper explains a theory about the lineage of Sicilians is one of my favourite scenes of all time!

I'd also like to add my appreciation of Point Break, absolutely loved that film when I was younger, must watch it again soon.

Might I add Tombstone to the classic 90's movies Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer with a great supporting cast and some great 1 liners!

Yep, that scene is one of the diamonds. If only the rest of the film was 1/10th as good. It ends with
the most ridiculous 3 way shootout and an ohmygod he's dead boo hoo, oh no wait hes not yaaay. everyone else in the room dies of course. awful awful film.

Ok I'll concede your point about the ending but I still love the film! Plus Patricia Arquette is damn sexy in it!

i remember going to see Point Break back in the 90s as a teenager

i sat down in the cinema not expecting much thinking this would be another run of the mill action movie, and WoW! i was blown away totally enthralled from start to finish

and the thing is it still looks as good today as back then, never miss it when its on TV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭Stone Deaf 4evr

It's an epic film and I reckon the reason it stands the test of time, is mainly because the action for the most part is grounded in reality, the fight scenes felt hard hitting and real - think the bit in the garden where his face is being pushed towards the lawnmower, and the foot chase was frantic and intense.

any remake is going to have something totally over the top, like him jumping out of a plane, standing on a surfboard, with a gun in each hand with dozens of cgi explosions going off around him.
but I suppose thats the kind of stuff the adhd kids love now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,050 ✭✭✭nokia69

true, CGI is killing action films

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,472 ✭✭✭✭Grayson

Strangely I was thinking of this film a couple of says ago. I got bored watching it the first time so I just stopped. I watched it all the way through a few years later and it was just as dull as I remembered. There's far better action films out there.

It's definitely being remade. Comes out Christmas day this year.
