Electoral areas = municipal districts?

    Hi guys,

This has been bugging me for a while.

Following the Local Government Reform Act, are municipal districts essentially electoral areas, just with a different name?

For example, looking at the County of Cork Local Electoral Areas and Municipal Districts Order 2014, it seems that both are interchangeable. (Blast! Still can't post links, but it pops up on Google.)

Could anyone explain the difference, and shed light on whether councillors are elected from electoral areas or municipal districts?

    Thanks!

Municipal Districts are replacing the Town Councils

they will essentially be the electoral areas for the Council Council for these towns

there will now only be the one group of Councillors representing the area rather than two

Thanks for that Riskymove, but I'm still a bit confused.

In the Cork statute that I referenced, it seems to me that MD and LEA are used almost interchangeably. For example:

    4. The County of Cork shall have the following municipal districts for the purposes of section 22A (inserted by the Local Government Reform Act 2014 (No. 1 of 2014)) of the Local Government Act 2001 (No. 37 of 2001):

    ...

    (g) the Municipal District of Kanturk-Mallow consisting of the Local Electoral Area of Kanturk-Mallow;

    (h) the Municipal District of West Cork consisting of the Local Electoral Area of West Cork.

So, what exactly is the difference between the Municipal District of West Cork and the Local Electoral Area of West Cork, which comprises the former?

When it comes to the next local elections, will I be voting for councillors representing a local electoral area or a municipal district?

    Thanks again!

LEA and MDs are essentially the same when it comes to electing them

MDs replace town councils and will cover those areas

they will no longer overlap...i.e. if you live in Mallow you will vote for those in the MD

previously you could elect a town council and then county councilors separately

Okay, cool, thanks for clearing that up, Riskymove!
