IOT Lecturing Opportunity

I've been offered an opportunity to become a full time lecturer at an IOT.

The problem is I have a good business which I started 3 years ago, and would be worth at least twice in earnings what the lectureship offers.

Would I be able to work both at the same time?
What are the typical hours involved (both classroom and other)

    Any advice appreciated :)

I don't know the exact hours but lecturing is a full time job it's not just a few hours in a classroom.

Can you do two full time jobs at the same time? Is your business flexible in its time commitment. Have you someone else running it for you if you take up the lecturing?

My business is fairly flexible, and only I can do the work as it's consultancy. I would estimate it takes me around 16-24 hours per week.

I'd love to hear from other lecturers who also work as well?

Many lecturer contracts would have restrictions on other employments.

I'd be astonished if anyone lecturing full-time with all the other things that entails would have time to run a successful business on the side.

In for a shock if you plan on combining ft lecturing role with something else. If it's an IOT, there'll likely be a significant teaching load too, 15-18 hrs per week I'd say.

During your first year or so, every class room hour will take at least 2 hours prep, so that's 50 hrs a week before you even factor in admin, exam prep, corrections etc etc

    Thanks for the advice.

I completely understand the workload involved in teaching time and admin. I have 6 hours per week part time for the last 2 years for evening classes so I'm not going into this blind. I already have a substantial amount of class content build up over the last 5 years (120hrs+)

I'm interested in those currently lecturing in an IOT, on the day-to-day requirement if one was to deduct hours due to research, consulting, extra-curricular work.

    Opinions welcome.

    Hi OP,
The short answer is Yes, it can and does happen regularly.
18 hr (AL) or 16 hr (L) can be timetabled into 3 hectic days allowing for other work. If you take on postgraduate students then the hours will reduce. If you work through a centre offering consultancy services it may be taken into consideration for buying out time.
However it strongly depends on what subjects you're teaching, whether any of the classes are repeats (I used to give the same IT class for 4 different groups every week in a former life) or require little correction time. If there are several exam papers then these can be written well in advance, especially if you have 5 years of past versions to use.
If you have a lot of the material ready then it's just a matter of time management. You will be asked to sign a contract which will come with a form for declaring other work interest and this does has time limit (somewhere around 20 hours per week).
In any case you'd be advised to talk to the respective line manager and explain your situation. External work wouldn't be looked favourably upon if you were expected to carry out significant research but in some cases that's not an issue.
Some colleges don't engage in consultancy work due to litigation risks or professional indemnity costs.

Full time means 19 hours a week lectures, plus meetings. You may get one research day a week, but your teaching hours would be concentrated in the other four days. Lectures don't prepare themselves, and assignmetns don't mark themselves...

Only you can tell if you could fit your other job around that.
