Friend of mine has a 99 corolla and the gear change seems a bit tight , not smoothly moving from gear to gear when changing. Would this indicate a weak clutch or is their adjusment in cable or is it a problem with the gearbox. Car drives well and doesn't jump out of gear but feel it should be looser to change the gears

Gearbox oil change might sort it, is it worse when the car is cold?

Gearbox oil change might sort it, [...]

    I'd start here.

    2 litres (1.9 is needed) of Motul Gear 300, 75W90. :)

Is the clutch dragging when fully pressed down , if so its just the hydraulics in the clutch slave or clutch master cylinder or simply low on clutch fluid.

On a level surface Is the car inclined to move when in gear and clutch fully depressed and handbrake off ? In other words clutch is not clearing the pressure plate and flywheel, still slightly engaged due to faulty slave cylinder or air in the lines, this would be more common fault for sticky gears .
However in a Corolla the cables operating from the lever to the gearbox may have gone dry and lubricating them may help. If the gear change is as bad with engine off its more likely sticky cables/ linkage...easy fix. Changing gearbox oil is normally not helpful unless box ran dry, and if so this would be bad news but unlikely.

No doesn't seem to improve when warm. How does one lubricate the linkages , cables etc , do you need car on a lift ?

Sprayed a bit of wd 40 on linkages and wherever I could get to an dseems to have loosened up the gearchangin quite a bit. Ta:)
