Connecting with a company on LinkedIn

I interviewed with a company a few months ago for a job that ultimately I was unsuccessful at getting. I really liked the company though and would be open to working for them in the future if there was a different job that was more suitable.

The issue is that a recruitment agency submitted my details to this company and got me the interview. So I don't know if its ok for me to connect with the recruiter at this company on LinkedIn, seeing an agency put me forward, so effectively bypassing the agency altogether.

Just to be clear, my intention would just be to connect with this recruiter and to say thanks for the interview and feel free to contact me should another more suitable role come up and leaving it at that.

I just don't want to be inappropriate by cutting out the recruitment agency or contacting this company directly when they might not want me to. But at the same time, I know after a period of time I'm effectively a free agent again and I'm not tied to this agency representing me with this company forever.

You have no relationship with the recruitment company, you did not sign any contract or agreement with the recruitment company.

You are the "product" that the recruitment company is "selling"to their "customer"

The company that you applied to will have terms in their contract with the recruitment company indicating when they need to pay for hiring people that they find through the recruitment company. It could be that the contacts are payable by role or for a period of time.

Feel free to contact the in company-recruiter to express your continued interest in the company. It will be up to the company to ensure that they meet the terms of their agreement with the recruitment company.

Don't worry about the agency, make contact with the hiring company directly if you like. If they hire you within a defined time period they will most likely have to pay a placement fee to the agency who introduced you in the first place. It depends on the terms they agreed originally with the agency and has nothing to do with you.

    Thanks for the replies.

I contacted the recruiter at the company to say thanks and to let them know I'd be interested in other roles with them in the future.

I am not expecting anything to come from it but I think it does no harm to stay in touch as you never know.
