    Hi folks,

Please advise if it is possible to buy a car with foreign driving license and if it is required to buy an insurance? If so, what's the cost approximately?

    Thanks!

Nothing to prevent you buying a car. All you need is money. You will need to insure and tax it before you can drive it though.

Insurance can vary wildly depending on years driving and other factors. Your foreign license will mean you pay extra as you cannot get penalty points.

    Look for quotes online.

Thank you, and how much will it cost if I'm driving without insurance? Do the driving police check the presence of insurance quite often?

For insurance gibe these guys a buz

    Clements international

they specialize in insurance for ex pats. I have insurance with them, it was cheap for the car I am driving and I found them really helpful.

The only thing is that you have to pay the premium in one go. They don't do monthly payments.
in addition to that I also have AA for roadside assistance, I prefer paying it for peace of mind.

    You serious about insurance.

Does the country your from not have it that you must have insurance to drive.

Keep using your legs or public transport we don't need more driving around without insurance.

What happens if you crash or knock someone down are you going to pay all the bills.....

All info is readily available on citizens information.

You need money as stated above, nct on the car if over 4 years old, tax, insurance, fuel, money to service etc.

Driving without insurance is irresponsible and hurts everybody elses premium should you have an accident. as for checkpoint you may not meet one for 6 months and then meet 10 in 3 days hit and miss. Do not even think of driving without insurance. You may possibly be able to transfer your license to an irish one

If you get the maximum penalties: €5,000 fine, 6 months in prison & 2 years disqualification from driving :)

That should be the minimum in my opinion.

They also have access to a database which will highlight your car as uninsured and that's picked up by scanning your numberplate automatically from police vehicles.

Irish car insurance is also displayed on a disc on your windscreen, so it can be manually checked very easily too.

You'll be caught, your car would be seized and you'd be facing a court appearance.

If you damage another car, damage property or injure sometime you face criminal penalties for being uninsured and a very strong possibility of being sued by the injured party and losing a *lot* of money.

Don't even consider driving uninsured here. It's not optional.

Depending where your licence is from, you may be able to transfer it to an Irish one without any issues.

I would cover all damage by cash. I do have an insurance in my country.

I'm asking because I was told that foreign driving license is not recognized when you are buying an insurance in Ireland. Given that full Irish driving license takes about 1 year I'm not going to wait that long without a car.

    Again, the solution is clements:
    https://www.clements.com/

They do not care where your license is from as long as you have one

So do you actually have a licence and you are wrong it does not take a year to get a licence.

If you have a full European driving licence you can opt to exchange this at a ndls centre.

Do not drive without insurance its that simple.

If you can't afford it then walk or cycle.

Its not the damage to the other car you need to worry about, but if there's an injury you'll be looking at a minimum of €20k and the sky is the limit. Please don't do it, your license might be recognised or get at least a learner's permit.

The reason I'm asking for advise here is that I wouldn't like to drive without an insurance but was told about difficulties in getting it with a foreign driving license.

I have an international driving license issued in Russia (in English language).

As far as I understood the truth is that it is actually possible to get an insurance even with a foreign driving license.

One more thing is that a person is allowed to drive a car with a foreign driving license for just 12 months. Is that the case?

Please read what people have written, it s not hard to get insurance on a foreign licence (https://www.clements.com/) and all the info you need regarding drivers license is here https://www.ndls.ie/holders-of-forei...ognised-states
If you don't want to read the link it says you are only allowed to drive here for 1 year and if you want to continue driving in ireland you will have to get an irish license, all the steps are included in the link above.

Just to make it clear again OP. Driving without insurance is against the law in this country. Driving without insurance is simply not a choice or option for you I'm afraid.

Going by this and your thread about medical treatment you are getting some seriously untrue information from people you have been speaking to.

You could be looking at needing to cover several million € if someone sues you for damages in a serious accident. It's unlikely you could cover your damages in cash.

Not having insurance here is simply 100% illegal. You're just not allowed to drive without it. Contact insurance companies or better still, brokers who could get you a quote.

Ireland is every bit as litigious as the US and you'll be facing possibly losing every cent you have to your name if you injure someone and get sued.

Driving uninsured would likely get you prison time too, especially if it's a deliberate act where you've decided simply to ignore the law.

Bad idea! You're asking for advise on something that you've been told is simply illegal. There's no discussion about it. You cannot drive in Ireland uninsured. If you do it's a criminal offence.

If you opt to commit a crime, you may be getting an unscheduled tour of the inside of an Irish prison, a criminal record that may prevent or make it difficult for you to get visas for other EU countries, the US, Canada, Australia, NZ etc etc

    Just don't do this! It's a crime.

How much cash do you have? Could you replace a 50,000 euro car that you write off and 100,000 + Euro worth of medical fees. Plus loss of earnings etc?
