    Hi,

I have an old esb unimog and i want to get it classified as agricultural. Im sure the powers that be wont make it easy to do this but by law if this can be done they cant stop you. I am willing to go the extra mile regarding if it has to be modified. i am just wondering has anyone been through this before or could shed some light on what or how would be the easiest way to do this, Thanks in advance

I don't know what it takes but would be interested to see the costs involved . Is it classified commercial now and can you bring it on the road ?

Not sure what you mean by classes as agri. It is probably already classed as a commercial so by using your herd number you tax it as such similar to having a jeep or van.

If you are looking to class in the same way as a tractor then this may be more difficult as it would need to be classed in the right catogery. See list below. You may have to ring revenue to get more info on how to do that. It may require fitting speed limiters and taking out seats.

I heard a tale about a german lad who moved to Clare many years ago, and brought a vintage Unimog with him. He wanted to tax and insure it as a tractor. At first tax office refused, but in the end they couldn't argue as it had a full 3-point linkage on the back.

I saw the truck once, so I know that the last bit is definitely true

I know sum of the old landcruisers that had a pto at the back could be taxed as a tractor and use agg diesel.

Father had a Unimog when I was a kid. Front and back pto and linkage, agri tyres and ran legally on Ag diesel

He did a lot of tillage and used for rotovating beet ground and tilling corn ground. Had a demointable sprayer rig for back.

Hauled beet from fields. All I remember was it was some yoke as it was in constant use

I saw one in our mechanic's shed a few months ago. It was in getting a few jobs done. I remember the mechanic saying that it can be legally run with green diesel on the road.
Came across this from 1998, I assume the status has not changed.

Well done BP. Remember that case. The man in question would be well known around west cork for hauling bales.Could often be seen heading for Wexford for straw. No doubt AGS were arguing that he was working for hire or reward so should have been running on road diesel. He had a well seasoned solicitor on side too.
When JCB Fastracs became common AGS had a great time stopping them too.

DJ is a neighbour of mine and I used go for a few loads of straw with him. Some fecking speed outta that mog. During that court case, all his defence was a picture of the mog with a 3 furrow plough ploughing a field

thanks for the info. might just go down the route of attaching a 3 point linkage onto it and a pto and surely they cant argue that it is not a tractor. Although this government seems to make rules as they see fit. Now wondering where i find a pto and 3 point linkage to do the job

I imagine most of the ESB Unimogs are bought as bare chasssis cabs ie classified as commercial from the factory. No ptos or lift arms etc. Sent to coachbuilders like Kellys or Hegertys to have specified bodies fitted. If they came with the accessories it might be a lot easier.
