When did rear seat belts become the norm/compulsory? Looking for a classic saloon as a daily driver but will be carrying children at weekends. Thinking along the lines of mid 80s corollas, Cortinas but open to any marque.

    Thanks

You can retro fit seat belts to most cars.

I stuck three point rears in my '83.

Easy if the mount points are there, a bit tricker if not, but doable.

Rear seat belts compulsory to wear from 1st day of January 1992?

Over the water - GB mainland regs:

    1981 Rear anchorages compulsory.
1987 New cars had to be fitted with rear belts.
1989 Compulsory for children under 14 to wear rear belts.
1991 Compulsory for adults to wear rear seat belts.

"Historic" vehicle concession: If there aren't any rear anchorages and thus no belts in the back. Children over 3 can travel unrestrained in the rear.
(Just add a hot summer's day, boiling-hot vinyl seats and burnt thighs for that full, retro 1970s experience. :D )

My Wolseley 16/60 had anchors for rear seatbelts. I put in rear seat belts.

OP, I'm going out on a limb here based on your user name.....

German built Mk2's all had seat belt mountings incorporated. They are hidden behind and under the rear seats & C pillar trim. Facelift UK Mk2's have the mountings but not the early ones. I know some people have "borrowed" the rear belts off Fiestas for Escorts.

Most cars from the late 70's had the mountings incorporated (usually behind trim). It's just a case of finding them and finding suitable seatbelts to fit.
